David Grisman

I was given some "new" records. I love getting a collection from someone else and hearing new artists that I wouldn't have known about/purchased. I'm listening to David Grisman Mondo Mando Warner Brothers record right now. He can really play the h*ll out of a mandolin. He reminds me of Bela Fleck in that he's a bluegrass player who is melding in a jazz influence on a traditional bluegrass inst...but defintely not a traditional jazz one. He's a little less jazzy (at least on this record) than Bela. I may just pick up another onea' his rekkids.

New tunes is fun! :)

Yep, love David Grisman. Have you heard his albums with Jerry Garcia? Or the one with Stephane Grappelli?

My introduction to "audiophile" hifi was the David Grisman Quintet album on Yamaha electronics and Polk 10s and 7s at Soundscape in Baltimore. It's a terrific album, almost exactly halfway between bluegrass and jazz ("Dawg Music", Grisman called it). Tremendous players and a terrific recording. Still own a copy, of course. Still own Polk 7s too, come to think of it, and a Yamaha amp.

Check out Not for Kids Only with Jerry Garcia. Probably one of the Jer-Bear's last recordings. It is terrific in every respect (including sound quality). Garcia's spent voice singing Shenandoah at the end (segueing into Brahm's Lullabye)... eye-moistening stuff.

Grisman's Acoustic Christmas album is also very good; as eclectic as you might expect.

Yup, "Jerry's Home", later cut down and releases as "the pizza tapes" (I believe) was my first introduction to David. Love it. Still one of my all-time favorites.

Very good fingers he's got on that miniscule fretboard...

Nice taste in music Joyce,
The recording below is a great one (bad pic)
I think its available on vinyl,I have it on CD.
The long song "Arabia" has a middle eastern flair.
Titled- Grisman & Garcia
On LP for sure I would like to point you to the band
"Old & in the Way" with a host of fine musicians
including Grisman:thmbsp:

Grisman has cut some fantastic records Joyce, digging through his catalog will be a real adventure.

He just played 2 sold out shows Dec 28th at the Freight. The late show was great! :)

I first heard David Grisman back in about 1974 on his first album. He invented a new genre of music with The David Grisman Quintet. Dawg Music is Jazz played on Bluegrass instruments. Many of the early pieces were Django Reinhart/Stephan Grappelli tunes (prewar Jazz).

The early group included David Grisman, of course, Tony Rice, Darol Anger, Todd Phillips maybe Sam Bush and/or Edgar Meyer. I can't get to my CD stash right now. But Be'la Fleck wasn't one of them. The lineup has changed today. They have a drummer!

Other favorite albums are The Pizza Tapes, Shady Grove and Old and In The Way. The Christmas album is David Grisman’s Acoustic Christmas.

Really fine music.

Carl, you're going to have to clue me in. I didn't know who he was. Well, I guess there will be a next time.

If he played on American Beauty then I've definitely heard him before. Guess I'll have to learn to pay attention. :)

I've got a few new albums to look for.

As others have noted, Joyce, you have some good listening ahead. I like a number of his recordings. The latest one I picked up was Tone Poems by Tony Rice and David Grisman, which showcases two masters playing vintage instruments.

And while I am at it, if you like "Jethro Tull-ish" folk rock you will wonder how you never noticed this band from Oakland who have been together for 20 years.
Our bay area best kept secret Tempest:

I'm going to see if I can talk Ken into going out in the middle of the week to see the Thompson show. Freight is a good venue to actually see and hear and not terribly far away.

...and Tempest will be in Pleasanton in Feb...and decent beer too...:)

I can see that you could be a bad influence on me. :D

Temepest almost always plays the Scottish games at Dunsmuir House there on the S.L. border with Oakland and the date may not be set yet.
