dbx cx3-mkI faulty channel repair

After having my cx3 fixed because of a dead right channel on arrival, I used it daily for about two years with mostly no issues.

Two days ago, I fired it up to discover my right channel was presenting a large ac-synced humming noise. I quickly unplugged everything and checked all my wiring, to no avail. Same fault as two years ago. When plugging it back in, right channel was very shallow, almost inaudible.

I figured out it wasn't worth two weeks of waiting time and $150 in labor, so I took it apart myself and started digging around. I have very little knowledge of electronics, but I was interested and motivated. Long story short, I found that one of the opamps had already been replaced, so I switched it out for a new one. Still no output after that. Dug a little deeper to find that a transistor on the output board had been replaced. I switched it out with one of its neighbors (took the one from the surround rear right, I'm only using 2ch so the front right output was the issue).

After doing that, I plugged everything back in to find my issue was resolved. Lucky me :)

While doing that, I used an opamp I had laying around, a TL082CP, and didn't have a transistor to replace the faulty output one, so I just switched it out for the time being.

Now comes the questions:
- Is there a worthwile drop-in replacement for the CXA4558 6J01 from Sony (dip-8 opamp) that I could use for replacing all of the old opamps in the unit? I couldn't find any info on the exact original model from Sony, and I'm therefore struggling to see if there would be specific characteristics I should watch out for.
- What is the difference between Sony CXA4558 6J01 and Sony CXA4558 6F02? I've got a dozen of 6J01 throughout the preamp, and a few 6F02, but I once again can't find the difference between the two.
- Where could I source a K163 K26X transistor from? I'm unable to find any info on the "K26X" variant of the K163, and I'm only able to find some -L or -B variants. Even the datasheet doesn't seem to appear on the internet.

-The tone control board, on which I replaced the op-amp, and on which you can see both original op-amps models, I'd like to replace them all with never ones if possible.

The output transistors (I don't get what those are used for exactly?? My guess is they are for the mute button, but I'm not really sure. The broken one is the one which already has been replaced (visible by different markings).

I would leave the 4558's, if you really want to upgrade them use NJM2068. Don't worry about the slightly different part number.
Get rid of the TL082. It's a FET input, not a bipolar like the 4558 and may not play well.

2SK26 is a FET....not a standard bipolar. Yes, probably for muting. There are a few modern choices today to replace them with.
 
I would leave the 4558's, if you really want to upgrade them use NJM2068. Don't worry about the slightly different part number.

Thanks very much for the insight! I'll ditch the TL082 as soon as I get something to replace it. Is there any reason why that channel keeps popping the muting transistor? It doesn't make sense to me, as in normal operation it shouldn't be taking too much...

Also, where did you get the "2SK26" from? I can't really wrap my head around the markings of those components...

For the opamps, I've seen people recommending NE5532 as a drop-in replacement, is there a particular reason to choose the NJM2068 over them? Sorry about the list of questions, but why are you recommending that I use sockets for the ICs? Isn't that prone to failure on the long run?

No idea. Until you replace all the electrolytic capacitors and put in the right op amp, who's to say.

That's how everything is marked. A 2SC458 transistor won't have the 2S. Nothing does because it's universal. So add 2S to K26.

The NE5532 would work fine as well. Cheaper too.

Allright, I'll order some amps, sockets and look for the transistor. I had no clue about the 2S in front, no wonder I wasn't finding a thing!

Once again thanks, and I'll update you once I get the time to finish the repair. The recap might have to wait a little longer, I need time to do it properly.


nb: almost forgot, but do you know of the difference for the opamps marked Sony CXA4558 6J01 and Sony CXA4558 6F02?
