DC area gets rocked with storms yesterday evening

I have been living in this area for most of my life and cannot remember a time when we had as wild a summer storm as we did last night. There are trees down everywhere, the power is out all over and streets are blocked off from Maryland to DC and Virginia. Sadly enough we have power at work.

I was stranded for a while between east and west falls church metro stops. And AT&T service was down because the network was deluged. God forbid there is ever a real catastrophe in this city. The place would shut down completely.

We got hammered... a few pictures of my back yard, before and after.. No power, and heard on the radio this morning it might be until Saturday evening... EEEeeeerrrrrrr....

OH.. btw.. everything JUST missed the house..

A MASSIVE oak tree two lots over on the side of a hill uprooted. It was easily well over 100 years old.. it took out another huge well over 100 year old oak in my neighbors yard.. uprooted it too.. then both of those came into my yard and took out all the trees in my back yard.. 6 very good sized trees, and you see them all on our deck...

I saw everyone on the streets as I was driving home on Lee Highway. It was crazy and people were getting soaked.

Yep.. took them all out.. There is one it took the whole side off, by the stairs going down from the deck, but I don't know if it will be savable or not since it took off the whole side...

Found branches from that one down the street at the intersection.. it had to be some massive wind

eh.. not my yard.. we rent.. but we won't have any more shade, and we have a feeling the landlord is going to do as little as possible as slow as possible to get it taken care of..

Damn James! Looks like Paul Bunyan took some roids and went crazy with his axe.

We lost power for about 3.5 hours. I was trying to drink all my cold beer before it skunked, but then PEPCO came through.

I saw the storm track on the 11 pm news last night, and it looked downright nasty.

There was a picture in the Post of a house in Arlington that had a massive Oak drop on its roof. We lost some branches here, no doubt if I was to hook the trailer to the tractor and patrol the place I would find a bunch. Florence had taken our neighbor to her doctor and was driving home in the middle of it, at about 5 - 7 MPH.

Power to the people

When Hurricane Hugo came through in 1989, I was without power for 10 days. :sigh:

I swore that whenever I built a new house, I would put in a back-up generator.

Built the new house last year and installed a 16KW unit fueled by natural gas.

In 15 days I will have been in for a year, and it has yet had to run due to a power outage, but it's there when it happens!

It does "self-test" once a week for 11 minutes, but runs at half-speed and doesn't go on-line. I usually perform a full scale test once per quarter.

You really don't think about how important power service is to you until it's out for a day or two!

That line of storms that you folks got in the Mid-Atlantic has stayed north of us her in the Carolinas due to a high pressure zone stalled over us.

Cleaning up those trees isn't any fun.

Wow, this is bad news. My brother is a Captain in the Navy stationed in DC lives in Arlington with his family. Gonna have to check on him. Hope you guys all get through this okay. Power still off in Arlington?

We never lost power at our house in Arlington and my neighborhood is fine. I think there were micro bursts going on all over the place. On my way into work I noticed a couple of areas that were only a block in size where all the tree tops were taken out. One block over all was fine.

Yeah.. had to be a lot of micro bursts.. all the way down the GW parkway was like that... one area fine, 50 feet later, the tops of trees broken out.. then another good stretch.. then more trees broken off or uprooted..

A real mess to clean up

We had a storm like that came through here a few weeks ago.

There were some tornadoes spawned as a result.

Heavy rain at my house, 5 miles away, tornado!

The tornado(es) would touch down and then hop back up and touch down again a mile or so away. An aerial view showed a clear path that it took.

Please be careful cleaning up the mess, both with the chainsaws and the backs!

The Storms South of Baltimore are always worse then North of the City. Must have something to do with the topigraphics. Very hilly in Northern Baltimore County. It rained like hell, and a few close lightening strikes, but that was it.

The tornado hit in Falls Church, VA.

Multiple exits were blocked by trees on my commute yesterday PM. Roads were closed, lights were out (still out this AM), and leaves, branches, and construction debris littered the Beltway.

My parents will be staying with me until their power goes on. There goes all my wine.
