Dcm tf700 vs dcm tf1000

Hello all,

I acquired some DCM TF700's a short while ago and recently came across some TF1000's for sale. Other than being taller and possibly more bass in the 1000's, would there be a huge difference in sound compared to the 700's? Would you recommend the TF1000'S to the 700's? I guess I'm trying to reason selling the 700's to the 1000's. Any help or info is much appreciated! Thanks.

The only difference I've noticed about DCM speakers of that era is that they all have the same sound, the bigger ones just have more of it. I have TF600's and TF v.10 along with CX-27's and I couldn't tell you that there is a huge difference, I think they all use the same drivers.

Thanks for the reply. If there's really not a noticeable difference, then I guess I should hold out. I have the TF-600's and those are hard to beat. I love the way they sound. Just don't see the 1000's for sell to often. Well, not that I've seen. Thanks again. :thmbsp:

If they are reasonably priced and you have the room, I would get them. As you say they are not that common. Listen to them for a while - decide which ones to keep (or keep both pairs).

But that's just me.... I sort of have a DCM fetish myself.

AK: Home of the enablers! :D

I wound up with 6 pairs of DCM TFs back when I was collecting them - 1000, 700, 600, 500, 400 and a pair of TimePieces (used one for a center).
When I sold them off, I did keep the TF600s and use them as rear surrounds in my 7.1 Surround system because they seemed to have a measure of "transparency" - the room seems bigger with them back there!

But the TF1000s do play lower and deeper than the 600s

I did a big thread on them here:

That's interesting :scratch2:. I never thought as using the 600's as surrounds. I have to look in to that. whats a good asking price for good pair of tf1000's? Thanks

any opinions on the DCM 700s compared to 500s?

I just got a pair of rebuilt/restored 700s, and the high-to-mid frequency response is noticeably weaker and poorer in the 700s (vs. my 500s), despite new quality Seas tweeters and upgraded crossover caps

I thought the 700s would be very similar and likely better than the 500s, and at least duplicate their great reproduction of highs, strings, etc.... but I'm seeing the opposite! :saywhat: :saywhat: :saywhat:

any comments?

Techs tend not to look into the mylar or polyester caps of crossovers. The black polyester 6uf cap that is part of the tweeter network goes bad in the DCM crossovers. In my TF1000 set one measured only 10% of its original value and the ESR was horrible. The other one measured 1.5uf with acceptable ESR. When that cap goes bad, the highs disappear.

I replaced them in mine. The highs are all there now, floating on a bass that elicits a visceral experience. :-)

The black caps may be Nashville or other brand Bakelite shell nonpolar elyticaps, which would explain the high ESR when bad.

That is very much possible! The schematic specified a mylar cap. See: http://s230.photobucket.com/user/Do...1000/DCMTF-1000crossover_zps86cf0d5e.jpg.html

The circuit board I was faced with had an axial cap, AR brand, type PB600. Black body with red brown ends. Very similar in appearance to these ones here: http://i01.i.aliimg.com/wsphoto/v0/...r-oil-electrolytic-capacitors.jpg_220x220.jpg

I now know not to grab these whenever I run into surplus. :-)

The E-caps tested good. ESR was acceptable on the Sencore. The speakers did improve when changing them out. So much for the Sencore testing.

thanks everyone... I should add that the tweeters are NOT original Vifas, and were replaced with new Seas Prestige 19dtff1 "direct equivalents", which I'm now hearing might not be so perfect a match (might not be quite as sensitive and slight difference freq response)

I'm currently opening these up (arrrgg...) and inspecting/testing, more info coming soon!

Cool, look for that black 6uF cap. It may be the reason why the tweeters were replaced. And why the set was moved...
