DCM timepiece

I'm thinking about buying a pair of DCM timepiece speakers off Craigslist for $35. I haven't been able to find much info online about these. Can anybody share their thoughts regarding the asking price and general sound of the speakers?
From what I've gathered, these older models sound quite nice.

I appreciate your vote of confidence! I'm excited about them. I hope they're in good shape.
I was originally hoping to snag some Polk monitor 5b or 5jr but I never got response from the seller. The price on these seemed good and like all things involving craigslist.... patience + serendipity = :music: I'll be looking forward to hooking them up to my NAD 3080.
 
I went to pick them up over my lunch based on both of your recommendations. I'm kinda surprised at the lack of heft. I'm anxious to get home and hook 'em up.
 
Color me impressed! I got home from work and hooked these babies up to my Marantz sr770 that I have running my desktop computer system in my home office. I had a pair of Cambridge 'Ambience' by Henry Kloss (Circa early 1980's) hooked up to the system. My initial reaction upon hearing the TimePiece speakers was... wow! these things image really well. After listening for a few minutes I noticed how laid back the sound was. At least in certain parts of the spectrum. No mid-bass hump. Fairly relaxed sounding. I didn't think that placement on top of my computer desk was ideal (desk is about 5 ft wide and 3ft deep... I placed the speakers as wide apart as I could and about a foot away from the wall behind the desk. Room is approx. 12x12.) ..... so I moved the speakers to my main system where I placed them on top of some other DCM speakers (kx10 series 2). I'll get to the KX10's later.
The kids had just gone to bed so I wasn't able to crank the valume up. I was going to have to listen to everything at low to moderate volume.
I hooked up the TimePeice speakers to my NAD 3080 (circa 1977-78 80wpc) and tried out a few different genres of music. I played some John Coltrane (Blue train) and noticed that the brass instruments had a nice forward presense. The bass was there but I think a sub will be needed in the future. I tried a little David Gray, Jack Johnson, Tracy Chapman, Ben Harper... Vocals were nice.
I've got an Onkyo receiver that I'd like to compare to the NAD. More testing/listening to come tonight.
So far, it's a well spent $35 bucks.

As far as I can tell these speakers consist of a 6.5" and a 1" tweet. The grills are not removable.
 
Glad you picked them up, another DCM fan!

A former co-worker from my days at Koss says the optimum height for TimeWindows is 9" off the floor. He has a pair of TW3's that have been rebuilt.

I'm running my 1's flat on the floor, about two feet away from the wall. The imaging is spectacular.
 
The TimePiece went with the TimeBase. They show up on occasion. It was an ahead of its time attempt by DCM to create a satellite/subwoofer system. You are correct that here is a bass drop off and a sub should balance well with them. I have always wanted a TimePiece/TimeBase setup but have yet to run across one. Congrats on your find. I think you will find the old DCM will give you more pleasure than your newer model.
 
dcm speakers

I just got a pair of Time Windows (for free) They were in a friends shed for a year or two. The grill cloth is bad on both speakers. The top and bottom needs to be cleaned and or sanded and re-stained (probably easy) My problem is that on one speaker both of the 6.5 in woofers do not work, and there is a small puncture in the rubber surround. On all of the woofers the paper material has turned light brown. I have not looked behind the woofers yet as they are epoxied to the cabinet. The speaker that works sounds very good. The tweeters do work on the other speaker. Any suggestions out there on a replacement woofer or could it be an internal problem. Could I put a replacement woofer in each cabinet, and an original in each (split the good woofers) I have TOOOOO many speakers now, but these sound good and don't take up much space as they are tall but thin. Thank in advance for any input....Bryan
 
You guys get that he picked up Time"Pieces" not "Timewindows" Right?

A pretty small speaker that sounds pretty good.

I bought a pair and ran them with a Sansui AU-555A. Sounded pretty darn good for a small speaker.

I think $35 is good (not great) price.

Thanks for the input. Pricewise, I'm glad that I didn't get ripped off. I thought $35 sounded like a fair price. I noticed that some others in this thread may have mistakenly thought I was talking about TimeWindows(TW) or TimeFrames(TF).... instead of TimePieces. Did I just buy TP? I would describe TP as smooth and soft in the bass department. I love my TP.

Placement is critical with this speaker. IMO
They have a suprisingly good bass when placed right.
Something tells me that they were designed to be paired with a sub or another type of DCM speaker.

I've noticed that placement does makes quite a difference in the sound. My listening area is about 15x25 and placement about 18 inches from the back wall with the speakers about 7-8 ft apart seems to do pretty well.
I'm the market for a suitable used sub to fill in the bottom end.
 
I have a pair of Time Pieces and they good but not in league with my CX-27's or any of my Time Frames. They are light in the bass area and do not quite capture the highs as well as Time Frames-possibly a different tweeter but I am not sure. Like KB I'd love to score a pair of Time Bass speakers that they were designed to mate with. I do have a spec sheet on these but I can't seem to attach it. If anyone is interested PM me and I can see if I send attach it to a regular e-mail.

I agree with your assessment of the upper ranges for the TimePieces. I've noticed that they don't quite capture the highs. I've still been enjoying the way vocals sound. The mid ranges are very nice. Jazz sounds really good through these speakers. very articulate.
Last night I hooked the Timepieces up to my Onkyo reciever (tx-sr503). How disappointing. Flat, dull, lifeless. The components didn't seem to mesh. I used to have some AR M4.5 towers hooked up to the Onkyo and they sounded the same. I'm actually wondering what speakers will get along with the onkyo?
 
Get them! The TF600's are definitely worth the $. I had a pair that I bought for $100, and sold to a friend for $200 after a refurb (replace dead tweeters, new speaker cloth, repair damaged crossovers. Took me about 6 hours and $60 in parts for both). He loves them, and I liked them too. Not sure which I liked more, these or the Infinity RSb Speakers i normally use.
