If you will check the Inner Ear web site you will see heads phones are far from perfect with most having high frequency issues and not being very extended or linear in the bass. That said headphones aren't influenced by room boundaries and furnishings. So the they do produce the raw signal very well. without room influences. Now if your headphones are not sealed then they can be easily influenced by outside sounds just like speakers. There is always one issue about headphones the average recordings are made to be reproduced by loudspeakers placed in an acoustic environment. They are not made for listening on headphones. That said there are headphones that can produce a very enjoyable but un-natural experience. I have a pair of Sennheisers I use when dubbing to make sure the raw signal balance is correct and the finished signal is as it should be. I also use headphones to check audio down loads via the internet before purchasing. Once in awhile I use head phones with my iPhone or lap top when I am waiting at airports or car service centers, etc etc. But just for casual listening and for life like presentations its all done via my loud speakers room influences included.
