DeoxIT

DeoxIT is environmentally friendly. A friend had an old Yamaha receiver that sounded all scratchy and was headed for the dump. I gave it a couple of squirts of DeoxIt and they had their old receiver back in the living room instead of the land fill.

'Bout time yall came up with a bendy straw. Still like mine better though. I've got a few "custom" made that fit into the strangest of locations and put the spray exactly where needed ...

... and ... can't stress this enough. Be CAREFUL where you spray the stuff as it can craze plastic - not good when we're talking face plates or meters. It can get into the tiniest holes too, so DO mask carefully if there's ANY doubt. I always spray on the low setting ...

Another neat trick ... spray some in a needle bottle for really tight locations.
 
I just ran out of my first Deoxit can. Was able to finish up a Sony 6055 with scratchy switches and difficult to turn tone controls. I then handed the unit over to my friend for her 'new' stereo. ....awwwww.

A little goes a long way!
 
Nothing unique or original, but my last use of D5 was on the controls of a nice Sansui 5000A. I got it from a friend who had it stored away unused at the cost of taking him out for breakfast. After a good clean with Deoxit - and AK's second favorite brand, Howards, for the wood case - I was able to pass it along to a friend of my son whose previous receiver had just died. Major upgrade for him in sound quality and looks (he said his live-in GF described the Sui as "comely").

DeoxIT was one of the 1st products I learned about when I started learning about rehabbing audio gear. It works. Now that my young sons and I are doing some projects together I get to teach them about the wonders of DeoxIT.

Not in the D5, eh ... or at least not that I've found. I've got a bottle of D100, but that's a bit overkill for most of my projects.

PS ... I hope your NEW! IMPROVED? fold down straw works better than the ones they stuck on WD40 ... those are seriously nasty in so many ways, and way more trouble than they're worth.

PS ... are the new straws adjustable for volume? As mentioned earlier, I do everything at the low settings on the old style can.

We have the 5% in needle dispenser too, which is the same 5% solution like D5 spray if you spray the solution out in a cup:

The new fold down straw for D5 doesn't have the L-M-H setting. However, you can control the amount of D5 sprayed, by using less or more pressure on the spray button.
May I know what's the negative thing that you found about the new WD-40 spray? Never tried it before, so I just curious :)
 
They leak, they fall off, they get knocked off, they get stuck, and when the entire head falls of the can, it of course has more than enough lumps and such so it'll get caught in the most inaccessible places instead of falling through. dOH!

Then again, maybe it's just me, or early production. And we're not talking the same sort of issues I'd expect to face on the radio bench, so forget I mentioned it.

** Will the old style nozzle still fit the new cans, just in case this ol' dog don't want to learn any new tricks? I'm assUming I still wouldn't get the adjustable spray if I did a swap?

PS ... thanx for the heads up on the D5 needle bottle. As mentioned, that's THE way to go when trying to avoid slop in tight areas.

Unfortunately you cannot put the old style noozle to the new can. However, if you still want to get the old style can & noozle, you can get the mini-spray version:

I learned about DeoxIT here on AK. Now I couldn't be without it. A screw driver and a can of DeoxIT, and you can bring most mildly misbehaving gear back to life.

When does the chocolate scented version come out? :)
 
My H/K pm655 went through two big repair shops and nobody could figure out why one channel died at random intervals. Luckily a guy I knew fixed it with a couple of beer's worth of deoxit. I couldn't believe the improvement! Now the thing is acting up again but this time I know the cure and it won't need any more "professional" repair shops.
 
I love DeoxIT! I use it all the time for cleaning out old potentiometers and switches. What I really like about it is with one application, it stays clean and trouble free for a long time. I have tried other contact cleaners and they don't stay clean for as long. It's great stuff and I highly recommend it.
 
I spray it all over my car's paint monthly. I don't know if it does much but it seems like it would. If it can take oxidation off knobs in an old receiver it can probably keep my paint from oxidizing.
