DIY Polk Monitor 10 speaker stands!

Well upon getting me some montior 10a's, i decided that i would like some stands. Upon countless searching and researching, i could not find a decent set, and all i came up with was some instructions on building my own from the polk forum. The stands in the instructions come out being about 4 inches off the ground, i wanted mine a little higher, so i added 3 inches to the height. I also painted them a flat black that would better match the speaker. Overall i am extremely satisfied with the outcome and the control in bass is phenomenal. Much tighter bass now, and obviously the soundstage is better placed now that they are at a 6 degree angle and off the floor. If anyone has any questions regarding this little project feel free to ask :) And now onto the pictures! :)

I just came upon a pair of DIY Polk-stands at a flea market (among the gardening supplies, no less--I guess it takes a special kind of skill to cobble together a pair of plant stands with a six-degree tilt... but I digress...).

They were pretty much falling apart, but a trip to the drill press and a few flooring screws fixed that in short order.

They replaced a much nicer (looking) pair of stands, sans tilt, and but for their looks (3/4" ply... nowhere near as comely as the OP's stands), they are a surprisingly noticeable improvement!

Seriously, folks, if you have Polk 10B's proper stands are mandatory!

(For the record, 3/4" ply has very low WAF--certainly much lower than the OP's stands. Don't ask me how I know.:D)

Nokian 93- Very nice stands. I bet they work very good. There is one thing that should be done on all projects like this that will not effect the looks or the results. Add a stringer across the grain,In your case front and back. A piece of 3/4" x 1" x the width. It will stop the base from getting the rocking chair effect. If each end warps 1/16" the speakers will rock or vibrate. On carpet it more than likely would not be noticed but on a hard floor it will eventually show up.
Again nice job.

Ed, I'm not quite sure what you mean, but it sounds like a good idea. Would you care to explain further? Thanks.

Any flat piece of wood, even plywood will warp. Most wood is not flat to start with. Speaker boxes have stringers inside in the corners where you can not see them. Carpentry 101 says to add something to stop warping. A flat piece of wood sitting on the floor with weight on it's center will soon warp up on the ends. Cheap stands seen in discount stores have this problem but can easily be fixed by adding a piece of wood across the grain. Many cheap stands are made of partic board as it is very resistant to warping but it breaks and is ugly. I like the stands but I just wanted the builder to be forwarned what will happen and there is a easy fix.:music:

I'll look into adding one. Especially since it can be painted black, I don't see how it will look that bad. I have some rubber feet pads along the bottom of the stand, but I know over time these flat Bottoms will warp. Thanks for the heads up ed. And the girlfriend actuallly loves this look so much better than them being on the ground. She said it gives them a "modern" look 0_o?? Bless her heart for im sure she probably thinks that's what I was going for, which I wasnt.

Hey! I saw the plans in the first picture... I am the one who drew it and posted that on the Polk Forum a few years ago... Good to know that it is still being used... Congrats.

Hey jon, thanks alot for drawing up those plans. They were perfect. I do have one question, why did you go with the height you did in the plans? I ended up adding 6 inches to the height. On many places I read they were recommending at least 8 inches off the ground.

Polk came with two different stands... A taller one and the short one... I had a short set and the measurements were based on it...

Jon, are you still out there. I can not seem to acess your plans or supply list for the speaker stands you made. I have some 10A's and lost the stands in flood. I would love to have a carpenter friend build them for me. Thank you for your help!

Hello cheflala. Not sure if this was Jon's plan, but this is for the polk monitor line of speakers. Hope this helps.
