The strips are velvet and are finished on both sides. I believe the width is 5/32". I found this online being sold by a hat supply company.Terrific job ! I read all of this thread but I haven't found any reference to what you exactly used to make the strips you put on both sides of the slot under the vacuum tube and that make contact with the record .

I have a Pro-ject VC-S2 ALU RCM. It works well, but is a bit noisy.I've cleaned about 50 records so far - no issues, just the threads in the aluminum started to wear today.
(*Edit: As of 10/2015 - over 500 records cleaned without issue)
The weight of the brush assembly is not resting on the record - it's at a pre-set height so the brushes just make contact.
The clamp is there to hold the record down during the vacuum step.
