Do I need a Preamp - Rega RP1?

Hi Guys,
I've recently bought a rega RP1 which is all set up and playing fine. The Rega TT has cables which i've inserted into my phono stage on my amp. My question is... do the turntable or the amp have a built in pre-amp that means I do not need to buy a seperate pre-amp? My audio is playing fine but i'm a complete novice and don't know if i'm missing out on something. My amp is a Marantz PM6005!

Depends on the cartridge. What cartridge is on your TT ? the RP1 comes with a MM cart (moving magnet) which is what will work on the Marantz phono input. if you didnt buy it new and the cart has been replaced by someone with a MC (moving coil) cart then you will need an external phono stage that works with MC carts. then you would connect to the AUX input not the phono
 
The above does not apply as the RP1 is "playing fine", so it's obviously an MM cartridge.
Also, you would not necessarily need an external phono stage with an MM, since a SUT would do the job fine.
 
"My phono stage ... is playing fine" so you are done. :)

There's nothing wrong with using the built-in Marantz preamp. That's what the Phono input goes through, an extra preamplifier.
