Do you run a sub in your 2 channel system?

For me, it depends on what speaker I am running at the time.

With the Advents or Koss......no need for a sub...at least in the current man cave room.

Now If running the Ohm FRS-5's, yes, I use a sub and usually have it set at around 50hz.

I definitely use a sub in my 2 channel setup simply because I gave up big floorstanders.
My room is sort of an awkward layout with no good placement options for floorstanders. I put small shelves in the two front corners of the room just above "door" level and use bookshelf monitors on the shelves. This frees all that floorspace and the mon.s are up out of reach of any visiting kids. Not the ideal placement but...

Definitely subs. I haven't ruled out going to four subs in the studio. Probably stick with one in the home office due to space constraints. I like two-way, sealed satellites with sealed subs.

Cheers,

Otto

I also run several subs but sometimes prefer listening without them. My wife claims our new roof and windows will last longer

it don't really matter if you got big floorstanders or small bookshelfs, there will be an added benefit to using more then 1 sub.

I have a small office setup (a bedroom I've turned into an office).

I have two pairs of speakers - KG4's and Boston Acoustics A150 (recently acquired - love 'em!).

I run a sub with the Boston Acoustics and a Marantz 2270, sounds great. I find I don't need the sub with the KG4's as much and run those with an Onkyo A-7.

My sub is a small Energy sub that does the trick just fine!

Just added an 8" velodyne sub to my system last night. I still need to do a lot of fiddling around, my cables are a bit short to experiment much ith placement atm. I can definitely see some issues with room modes if I start to push the spl.

On the plus side the boston bookshelfs seem to have responded very positively to the removal of the lower frequencies. My soundstage has immediately gained in depth and the midrange seems more detailed.

I think it's certainly worth further exploration to see if I can get the response tightened up some more and minimise the mode issue with placement.

I tried a passive for a while - just wasn't pleased at all - it was either too much or too little. I just got an active and am toying with it still - but love having the control over it. I've just got it hooked to the "Speakers B" output.

I had a set of Sansui SP-2500's which had a great build and pretty decent mid's and tweets but lacked bass. Enter powered subwoofer to the picture. Problem solved. I since have gifted the sp's and sub to my son. My stacked KLH 5 and 23's provide all the bass I need. I have tried adding a sub in with them but the bass becomes overwhelming. I do use a sub for LFE when watching movies.

no sub. I listen with my vintage speakers and the bass that comes with them.

Vintage speakers correct the rooms response in the acoustic domain? I wonder why people have gone to great lengths to develop digital room correction when "vintage" speakers do it acoustically already.:scratch2:

I think his point was that he's content with what he has, but there is a contingent of audiophiles who seem to think that not using subs is some lofty goal rather than an inherent compromise.

I too listen without the subs at times - probably about half the time. Depends on what's going on in the house, who's here, what time of day it is, and what mood I'm in. I will say that my current everyday listening set-up is also my computer workstation so that may account for something. The other set up is in another room and is still a work in progress (slow going).

What model? I have an Energy as well...

It's an Energy S8.3 -- 8" black 100W powered subwoofer. How about you? Do you like it? I like the real subtle bass most of the time, just where I can hear it, but no overpowering.

I use this small 8 inch sub to reinforce the bass from my 15 inch H-frames.

The best sub for music is the one you don't notice until it's taken away.

When I brought home my Focal towers I thought they had a decent amount of bass. After reading a lot about adding subs to a 2 channel set up I bought a REL T-9 with a 30 day return period. I thought I might be returning it since my speakers already sounded pretty good. I did not go to great lengths to set it up. I just followed REL's suggestions of setting it up in the corner behind the floorstanding speakers.

The results have been great! I do not hear the sub. However, I do hear a much stronger overall bass sound eminating from the correct position in the soundstage. Sometimes I think I do not have the sub adjusted correctly - that is until I turn it off. The overall sound becomes much weaker, less interesting. Now I can't listen without the sub.

e:XL•S8 is what's on the back ... 100w 8". The only drawback on this one so far is that it has no phase control.
