Depends on the source, the album, etc...but for me in my set up it a nice option to have...sometimes I find I like the loudness switch and the low filter...felt 'wrong' to try that but once I heard the results on some albums it made me a believer
 
I usually dig the loudness button in whatever form it takes. I’m not always cranking it.

So it’s best at low volumes. My experience is, when the volume reaches a point where you are rocking the room, and then you defeat “loudness”, you will not hear a difference.

It’s just does its low-decibel job imo.
 
Funny story. A decade and a half ago (well, 2008-2010) I hosted the PNW AK gathering. We lost the venue in 2011 :(, and I was unable to secure a new one. At any rate, at one of the gatherings one of our esteemed members showed up with a nice pair of Hales monitors and a Sansui 9090 (IIRC) receiver. He was playing it, and fiddling with things, and appeared a bit dissatisfied with the whole arrangement.
He asked me what I thought it needed.
So, I lean down and look at the positions of the high/low cut switches, the bass/mid/treble controls, whatnot. I fiddle it a little. Set the tone controls to bypass, shut off the high/low filters, depress the loudness button, and turn up the volume.

If it has no loudness at all, then I'll add some using a mastering processor to get closer to a Fletcher-Munson curve.
That suggests you have a complete misunderstanding of what Fletcher-Munson curves are all about, and it's a common misconception.
Fletcher-Munson curves are not flat, but that doesn't mean an optimised playback system should have the same non-flat curve. Fletcher-Munson curves are a family of curves showing how the sensitivity of human hearing changes with SPL.

The curves show that humans are relatively insensitive to bass at low SPLs but become more sensitive as the SPL is increased. The purpose of a loudness control is to increase bass at low listening levels to offset the ear's insensitivity to bass when listening at low levels. The shape of any one curve is irrelevant, it's the way the curves bunch together at the bass end of the spectrum which is significant.
 
In my youth I used the loudness button a lot. Now, not so much. Mostly because I only have one integrated amp that has a loudness control and it is non-functioning at the moment. Aside from that I like to have the option for tone controls or EQ. But over the past five years I almost never use EQ. I put that down to having better speakers now and a more controlled room environment.
 
12 o'clock on the volume dial with my GFA-555 and 15 inch Vegas will kick you in the chest lol.

But.. I spend most of my time under 9 o'clock.. but to be fair I enjoy my bass.. and 9 o'clock is enough to feel it everywhere.. and 10 o'clock things start getting hectic. 12 o'clock and you can hear it in the back yard from the basement lol.. intense. I have no tone controls so 1 o'clock is probably close to the limit of the speakers with bass heavy material.. not rap.
