Do you want to be done or do you want to continue?

I've read several posts that seem to lean towards an ultimate system goal and then you have those that like to tinker with everything. I seem to identify each group and respect each decision. Where are you at?

I just want to reach my goal...The Ultimate Audio System!

Is that so hard to understand?

My modest setup is really bringing me alot of joy at the moment. Good sound has caused me to make less treks to the flea market on Saturdays and spend more time listening. There are things that I still want to do as far as upgrades and expansion but I'm in no rush. Being light years ahead of where I was one year ago can be the "ultimate system" for awhile.

Are we ever really done? A conclusion is something you arrive at when you grow tired of thinking.:scratch2: My .02Cdn.

I don't think I am in either catagory. I am CURRENTLY very happy with my system It took a long time to get so. However, I know that my gear won't last forever. So, as things die, I plan to upgrade.:music:

I'm quite happy with my main system as it stands--there's no NEED to upgrade anything right now.

But that doesn't mean I'm not looking to improve as my budget permits.

That's quote worthy, I might have to rob that and make it my signature!

I make a system I'm happy w/, then listen for a while. While I'm listening, I'm looking around and thinking of ways to make it a little bit better. So I guess I'm somewhere in the middle.

Would you prefer that I had stated "There are always options"? Same message, fewer words. This is a hobby, you know?

It's not the same message. But yes, there are always options in hi-fi.

Tom, where there is the passion in this hobby/addiction, there are always options...we tend to extend the definition of "Ultimate" every time we experience a little bit "more", if you will. If you are really, truly, inescapably hooked on the "sound", you will never be done as long as you have the means to feed it and the drive to find that something.

I enjoy tinkering, but not obsessively so. I'm glad I can repair most anything I own, and perform DIY upgrades if/when I desire. I've gotten my main system to where I really like it, and did it on a really tight budget. Improvements now would entail more significant outlays in cash, and that's not in the cards for a little while probably. I guess in summary, there are still a few things I'd like to improve, but I'm content to do that slowly. I'm not into making changes just for the fun of it, I'd rather be listening to music and my rig gives me great satisfaction in that regard even if I am still aware of things that could be better.

There are a few things I've wanted to try for a while, but really I have little motivation to get them done. Things like building a small SE amp, or trying to bi-amp my speakers. Other things that I'd like to do will cost more than I can justify right now, like trying ALK crossovers and/or the improved midrange horn he recommends. I've also paid zero attention to my digital front end, and I really should try to make it so I can at least tolerate CDs and other digital formats.

I like to get things to play with, but my main system has been the same for a long time, and I have no plans of replacing it.

I can live with my speakers for the rest of my life. I really like my ST70 after the upgrades I made. I like my preamp but I would like to experiment with things I can't afford right now like Audio Research and Mac. I want just two more things that would allow me to ease up and that is a good record cleaning machine and a Thorens TD 124 MK II. I see myself getting to a point down the road where all I worry about are arm-boards, tonearms and cartridges. Oh, and a nice CD player would be nice too.
