Does a 35 Watts difference between Receivers make a REAL Difference?

To provide a non-technical and non-experienced viewpoint, I recently purchased my 2nd decent receiver ever - a Sansui 881 - that upgraded a Sansui 661. I could definitely tell a difference. Both receivers sound sweet but the 881 has more punch and a fuller overall sound even at low levels.
Whether this is just my ears, the wattage or something else entirely I have no idea.
 
having the 1020 and the 2020 in the same room sitting on top of each other and able to A/B them the difference is minimal, but distinct. just like a loudness control effect kinda
