I love them both. The hallway in the second, with all the angles, is really interesting. My hometown of Uniontown, Ohio, is filled with colonial-ish tract houses that all look the same...maybe that's why I grew up wanting something totally different (and more inspiring). The newer ones that they've been building that I see sprouting up by the dozen every time I go home look like they're made out of cardboard.

There were communities in California when I lived there that had beautiful, open-plan modern houses all over. The city of Orange was one of them. Cute and quaint, but with a lot of personality. that seems to be lacking in so many new-builds.
 
St. Louis has a great diversity of mid century modern homes, and the great gotcha is we have whole subdivisions of grreat ranches. Bernoudy is one of our best local architects, but he unfortunately went a little upscale of what Eichler built. Ridgewood would be close to Eichler's vision, only it is a little downscale of Eichler's designs.

I have been in both of your posted homes, John. The Sunset Hills house is quite stunning in its size, but ultimately didn't feel all that welcoming.

I go crazy over the Wright homes, because no two are seemingly alike in their themes. If I ever hit the lottery, my wife wouldn't mind going house hunting on this Wright site...

Picked up another mid-century Lane piece today: a cedar chest. It has a few small spots where the veneer needs attention, and one trim piece is missing but looks fairly easy to replicate.

And I got my first Eames piece yesterday! :D a German deck of the Eames "House of Cards" building set. Two cards are damaged, but it appears to be otherwise intact. I collect airline (and a few other) advertising playing cards, and I grabbed a lot at an auction specifically for a deck of Ozark Airlines cards. The "House of Cards" set was in the pile, and I didn't even realize what it was until a few minutes ago.

Try this on for weirdness - I went to two auctions this weekend - one yesterday, one today. Both were full of vintage cameras (and camera collectors), and both had the exact same Lane cedar chest. They were about 50 miles apart, directly off the same highway.
 
Cool finds. I use Howards Feed n Wax to fill in most veneer spots. It does a good job of evening things out.

I haven't been to an auction in years, though I've meant to. My girlfriend collects airline memorabilia, too. She mostly collects the airline-loge carry on bags from the '50s/'60s. She hit the motherload a few weeks ago at an antique flea market.

I have a cousin who collects TWA memorabilia, she has some great 50s and 60s destination posters. I confine my airline stuff to the "pilot" pins they gave kids and playing cards, for the most part. The one that's nagging at me is a deck of PanAm cards, I've never stumbled across any. The Ozark deck was a bit of a special treat for me, I used to fly them with my parents all of the time when I was a kid. I have several wing pins, but no cards until this weekend.

The Lane chest has a few actual chips in the veneer, and the original finish is some sort of white-ish wash that isn't in the greatest of shape. The veneer appears to be white oak, and I need to replicate one piece of trim, so I think I'm going to strip it and refinish in a maple or walnut color.

I found a really cool pyramid-shaped walnut lamp at the Saturday auction, too. It will look good on the funky round table I scored a few weeks ago, I think. I started going to auctions with my parents when I was a little kid, and the habit has kept up over the years. Sometimes very interesting stuff pops up cheap.

I could use a girlfriend that shares my interests... :D

It's nice, especially when she's really pretty! But..you end up with a house full of clutter because there's no counter to you wanting to bring stuff home (though we don't live together, we've managed to clutter up both of our homes).

I see a pair of speakers I like and she says "I want to hear them!" I see a TT and she says "If you buy that one, then you can give me the linear tracker!" (I recently heard this).

She has about 300 albums of her own and two technics 1210s and hafler separates that I didn't buy her...not a bad situation I say.

Sounds like a great situation. :) Most everyone around here thinks I'm completely nuts, and it isn't the best area to meet younger, single, professional people. The things we do for work...
 
Thought I would add my period themed listening space. Since I'm still in college my personal listening space is confined to my bedroom. I haven't acquired as much awesome furniture as you have, John, but pretty much every piece I have is used/cheap! I got the clock above the TV and painting above my bed after my great grandmother died..they were always my favorite. I've still got a couple Cadillac ads from the 40s-50s I need to get around to hanging up, and my lava lamp needs a new bulb so its not out right now. Let me know what you think!

I think your place looks a heck of a lot better than my place did in college. I love that clock. I saw that exact clock in an antique store in Ohio over Thanksgiving and still regret not getting it. My love of minimalism is always fighting with my love of collecting stuff. I don't remember if I stated this in this thread, but almost everything I own furniture wise was picked up off of Craiglist or yardsales or Salvation Army...even stuff like the dresser that some of the gear is sitting on, which is Drexel's Declaration series. Nothing wrong with cheap! There are a couple cool magazines that are good for vintage-modern inspiration. Atomic Ranch is one and Modernism I think is another.

My place in college had a floral print sofa and a every kind of hand me down design look imaginable. I like your pad.
 
The pictures not the greatest, but my speakers match our leather livingroom set almost perfectly. And the equipment rack has the same maple finish as the bookcases.

Ah yes - the oversized toy against the wall and the octagonal playard extended out to protect the fire place and audio equipment. I know that aranangement well. :yes:

Tiga, it is relatively easy to find MCM homes, you just need to get the right assistance. I would go here...http://tri-stateantiques.com/ and here...http://www.who-new.com/ for starters. They deal with MCM stuff every day and will have the real estate contacts in their rolodex that you need to chat with.

The key is not getting lucky, but building a network that will get you in a great MCM home you like...and you will have some other great MCM stuff to start filling it with to boot!
 
Black Sansui equipment except for black NAD CD player.
Sansui vanieer and black rack with chrome accents.
White coffee table with glass top, real very modern art lookin. Wife found it at the flea market of all places. It's so really coooool lookin. With large ash tray from Peru.
2 sofas with print of flowers and leaves on them (the Florida lifestyle)
New good quality brown carpet.
And a 4-panel 'very large' Vietnamese 'Mother of Pearl' art piece on the wall, fills up pretty much the whole wall, one of those 4 seasons chinese things.
Also 2 'cheap' chrome and gold end tables with glass tops but with really nice wide white matching lamps on them with raised palm white print. It works fine.
And a big 'plastic palm plant' in the corner in a fake chinese vase! Just can't get any better than that!! LOL

"Nothing Matches"...but it all goes together really well actually, nice really, very comfortable.

P.S. Looks really fine when the lights are off!! haha...Really, it's very comfortable. Not changing a thing. Done. :banana:
