RTR EXP 8V's

I found a pair of RTR EXP 8V's.... 2 weeks ago @ GW. Paid $19.95 for them. 8" cloth surround woofer +3" paper tweeter. Sound pretty sweet on my "New" GW Find $39.95 Realistic STA 2290 Receiver(100/ch) I bought them for the RTR tags, to restore my....
RTR G-200's....that I had for about 4 years. Philips dome tweet,10"woofer,& 12" Passive..Another Rainy Day Project!! I passed a pair of RTR 10" + 3" tweeter @ GW about 4 months ago....they were asking $39.95 for them...Don't remember the #'s.

I owned the RtR 280's in the 70's, literally burned one up, tooo much power. Speakers on three sides with downward fireing woofer. Here are pics of the RtR hybrids I use now as my main speakers. I love em. I think these were protoypes the RtR guys made, I've never seen another pair.

Holy smokes, those are way cool! With that woofer pointing into the carpet does it muffle the output any? Is that a 15'er?

Copa1934 - the woofers pointing down are into a 3/4" mdf with insulation in between the woofer and board - just like the RtR280's and 180's do it.

I bought a pair of the ESR-6 tweeters back in the late 70s. Here's a picture of one with the front grill removed.

used a pair of these on JBL L-88s back in the 70s ( thread on site now ),,,they made them stop sucking:thmbsp:

RTR Series III Speakers

Hello, everyone. I'm new here. Have been reading all these posts about the RTR speakers. I have a pair of the RTR Series III from the early to mid-70's, which are in superior condition. The "wood" (pressboard) cabinet for both have a few scratches but nothing major and something that a little touch-up can be done within minutes.

I don't know much about speakers, receivers, amplifiers, etc. What I do know is that when our neighborhood had our "block party" every summer, our stereo system provided the music -- and was it L-O-U-D! When the guys see these speakers in my home, they beg for me to sell them to them! Are these speakers that I have the same as what all of you are discussing around this board? I took some photos of them and will try to post them along with this. If this doesn't work, and you're interested at taking a look at them, PM me and I will email the pix to you.

Hello; I am new here too, I just happened on this thread so I joined. I had a pair of EXP-12's in the mid seventies and then a pair of 600D's in '79 which were my mains until I downsized in 1994. I really regret getting rid of them as I had more fun with these than I ever have since. I remember in college how my stereo (NAD 7040,Philips GA312 and the EXP 12's) blew away the competition,several people wanted to buy the same kind of speakers and my dealer was delighted to help. (they shipped 5 or 6 pairs to Maine).I remember that the Series III were sold at the TV's Audio and Appliances store a few miles from my dealer who said that they were not the same as the ones with the round badge. The round badge speakers were the high end line and were aimed at a different market. I became very familiar with these models from the EXP-8 to the amazing DR-1.I could go on and on.....

Rtr280dr

I have a pair of RTR280DR's that I purchased from the original owner a few years ago. They are the mains for my current set-up (Sansui AU717/TU717) and are paired with a set of KLH Model Six'. I love them... beautiful sound stage and a lot of warmth.

The original owner purchased them in 1978. I doubt that I will ever part with them.

I've got a pair of model 10's,just a 2 way with a 10 inch woofer but man they sound great.

Velvet - please post pics of your 280's - I had a pair of them in the 70's until one of them literally burned up - my amp shorted out and zapped it. They are awesome speakers, especially if you get the add on electrostatics.

I now have some hybrids that RtR made (I think they are called 1200's) and also 4 RtR 180's which are baby 280's.

The RtR's that were built before BIC bought the name were very, very good speakers IMHO.

FYI - To the best of my knowledge (which isn't much) RtR = Robert Rehorst and Ron Teyes, who made them in California.

It fun that you ask,just the other I went to look at a H&K 340 receiver that was next to nothing on CL.The guy brought everything brand new in 1976 at a place called Bremerton Stereo in Washington state,in my home town.I also at that time had just brought my first stereo,at Bremerton stereo,a Sansui 771 receiver,Garrad Gt-25 TT,and with the money I had left a pair RTR Exp-8 speaker's,great speaker's but just a 2-way.He had the next up the line RTR Exp-12 3-way's,long story kinda short I now have his Exp-12's,and love them,Tom.

I had two pairs of RTR Series IIA speakers. Gave the better pair to my sister-in-law for her system. I kept the beat up pair. I added a set of EXP-8's and they are probably the best sounding bookshelf/small floor speaker I have ever heard. The construction quality rocks and the sound is really nice- even on the Series II stuff! If you can find them in good shape, buy them.

Hi - I agree with hdewees about the 280/ESR15 combination.

I have a beautiful pair and they hold their own against Infinitiy Kappa 9 and QLS1 (and require much less power too) They don't looks like a very sophisticated design but the sound is very dynamic and impressive.

I grew up 6 blocks from a specialty audio store that sold those RtR's - talk about wowing a young kid - I don't remember the price but I'm sure they were very expensive.

I still love the pre-Bic speakers.

A year or so ago, a pair of the big 280's were in my local SA, for like 40 bucks. They were just too big and I had no room for them, but in hind sight, I should have grabbed them anyway. They were in very nice shape.

Hey guys, can't find any info on the RTR series IV Model E speakers. I have owned a set for 31 years or so. They are in great condition except some of the laminate finish has lifted. They have been used daily in my living room & still sound great. I am sure speaker technology has improved immensely since these were new but these still sound really good. As far as I can tell with the series IV models A thru E progressively get bigger with more speakers in them. I have not found a single picture on the internet of this model. Mine look like the model D but with two more tweeters & two more mid range speakers in each cab. 2 mids & 2 tweeters in the front with 1 mid & tweeter on each side. 4 of each total & 2 12" woofers in the front. They are big! any info on these would be great. thanks in advance. Here are few poor pictures.
