Does The Level Of Literacy Expressed Within A Post Affect How You Value A Post?

To answer the question posed in the first post of this thread, yes. Sometimes a swear word is the most correct choice to convey an intended meaning, but that is very unlikely to be the case if a post has many swear words.

My answer to the separate question posed in the title of the thread is also yes.

Nonsensical sentence structure on AK forces me to read and reread in an effort to comprehend the author's intended meaning, sometimes without eventual success.

I suspect that this is seldom due to a lack of sentence construction ability. Rather, it is because the author couldn't be bothered to read over his own post before pressing Post Reply. Is someone who doesn't care if his intended readers can decipher his meaning likely to care whether his content is correct?

A similar thing could be said about poor spelling, although it is usually less of a bar to understanding and more effort would be required to clean it up.

By this point in your life you know if spelling is a problem for you. Why not avoid using words of which you're unsure? When that isn't feasible, look in the dictionary. Consulting a dictionary often would rapidly increase your sure list.

There is a poster in this very thread whose spelling has improved by leaps and bounds in a relatively short period of time. My respect for his efforts has led me to not automatically be dismissive of his posts. Now, I read and consider them carefully before disagreeing. Actually, I agree with him far more often than I did before.

The thread title uses misdirection. Use of 'swear words' and 'inappropriate language' does not necessarily indicate the poster's 'level of literacy.' Extremely literate persons can choose to communicate in a more informal style in an Internet venue, including even the use of the vulgarities that frequently pepper common speech.

When I think of 'level of literacy,' I tend more to think of things like knowing the difference between 'its' and 'it's.' Ordinarily I wouldn't make an issue of a little error like that, but when the author has a track record of mounting a high horse and sneering at the 'morals' of other posters, I become more critical.

Anyone that thinks that literacy and profanity are exclusive of each other should stop trolling the internet and go read The Canterbury Tales instead, although the original text is probably beyond their ken.

I have to wonder if the OP is using this board as a social experiment for a psych class? In any case, some of us apparently aren't amused ...

PS ... long as the topic is LITERACY ...
  • : the ability to read and write
  • : knowledge that relates to a specified subject
I think the word you're looking for is "profanity" ... assUming that IS the topic in question.

And yes, under the accepted definition, LITERACY is a BIG plus when it comes to clearly and concisely commenting on a subject, and a certain level of expertise certainly contributes more to a thread.

There is enough snobbery in the high fidelity community to begin with for me to expect to read PHD-level english writing n a web forum.

Let's face it, at least this side of the pond, audio is probably a better way of flaunting how wealthy you are than owning a Series 7 BMW , we don't get to find awesome vintage speakers in garage sales as you guys do and it is very easy to pay north of $100 for anything you can think of either it is a pair of vintage Wharfedale's or some 2000's entry-level mini monitors just step by OLX (sort of a Craigslist) and check for yourselves. We only very rarely get to come across bargains and they are almost always a gamble because if someone is selling vintage or any highish-end audio at a low price that probably means they don't care about it and it's been seriously uncared for.

With this in mind, flooding a living room with four digit price tag gear that costs more then the next door neighbours's car will surely make a statement and people just get completely over their heads and feel superior with their thousands of dollars receivers connected to their hundreds of dollar interconnects that provide ultra high fidelity orgasmic sound waves...

Look at me!

Don't look at me!

Look at me!

Don't look at me!

Look at me!

Don't look at me!

(I'm conflicted) o_O

Do you feel that someone who has tried hard to express themseves well irrespective of their language skills impresses you more than a person whose posts are full of swear words or inappropriate language?

I suppose it's my Catholic school education (Sisters of Mercy) in Chicago showing but for quite some time I had little concern for your views because of your frequent abuse of the ellipsis (a pet peeve of mine, along with syllable multiplication). I now realize you're a sharp guy with interesting things to say but the ellipsis thing put me off.

I've nothing against profanity and I enjoy blasphemy but It's best done sparingly for emphasis or effect. Twain supposedly said of profanity that many know the words but not the music.
