Looks like it time to use "The Google" as us old folks say. Amazon for the HK and compleated sales on ebay.

Well that is MUCH more difficult to answer, because now it is all about your personal taste and the direction you want to go with gear. If the Nikko stuff is not in use and you can usr the HK then go for it. If you want to build a system around seperates then stick with the Nikko and build on it.

Not HK in general but I think most offerings in roughly that range from most manufacturers are less than stellar.
It might be great. I would research reviews before trading. Also, they guy wants to trade it for some decent vintage gear. What does that tell you?

I've been reading reviews all morning and I believe this to be a good product.
The thing is; I don't use my Nikko components anymore, they're just for backup. And I couldn't get $100 for them locally. So this guy calls me up and he has no money but loves vintage Nikko stuff (go figure). So I'm now thinking that the HK might make a good trade for what is now not in use at all.

Nikko products aren't easy to come by. HK 3490 is a 2-channel modern receiver. While there are numerous good reviews over it, I can't say I was too impressed with a different modern HK receiver I had for a short bit. While it was a 5.1 receiver, it didn't have that amazing of a sound (soundstage specifically).
Now looking up that HK 3490 again, it looks like it might have a sturdier front part (lower grey part) than the cheap plastic that came with mine. I think it might be a brushed metal of some sort.....or they could just possibly added a "brushed" look on a plastic, so it could be a lot better than the surround variant I had.
The main reason why I was about to buy the 3490 was because it had digital inputs (optical/coax). You'll want to ask yourself if you want/need digital inputs. Obviously your Nikko isn't ever going to have that, but you'll lose a unique part of audio history if you trade it in. You might regret it later on.
Or you might not regret one bit. If you're strapped for cash and this is one of the cheapest/easiest ways for you to get a modern piece of gear (with a remote!).

Those 3490s are pretty lackluster. Decent power, but the sound leaves something to be desired.

Exactly. Who wants 120watts of just mediocrity? Unless you're trying to play loud for parties and not many are really going to pay attention to soundstage or imaging with high watt systems.
