Does Your SO Dig Your Hobby?

So when I met my hubby he had never heard a record in his life and it took him discovering old artists like Screamin Jay Hawkins and Robert Johnson to appreciate the occasional cracks and pops of old vinyl. Tried to get him to listen to the Misfits when we first met and he was not very fond of the sound quality LoL
Anyhoo its been many years and finally he seems to be kinda sorta getting into it. So for his birthday next week I have picked up limited pressings of a few of his favorite artists. I picked up all the colored vinyl reissues by Cattle Decapitation, Children of Bodom 'Halo of Blood' silver vinyl, High On Fire 2xLP on purple vinyl, some etched Nile vinyl and i will possibly be getting him the Vengeance reissues of all the colored vinyl The Cramps records. I am hoping this will get him to like vinyl a bit more by buying him what he digs the most LoL
Have any of you guys out there gone to any lengths to get a significant other into your love of vinyl?

My wife loves vinyl, she doesn't get super into the gear but she has been a good sport about the amount of it i have drug home and she likes the turntables and plays the records and what have you.

she has a Sony TT i found and a SX-780 she uses pretty frequently.

it is a bit of a double edge sword... i guess I can't cry too much because I have my JBL L1's and Monitor Audio Silver S1's but awhile ago I brought home some delightful ADS 400's and my wife TOOK them ... lol... I was going to use them cause they are awesome but she totally wanted them and took them from me.. pretty funny actually.

the 400's are nice walnut veneer pretty nice shape too I cleaned them up and put some restore a finish on them they look pretty sharp... now I just have to find speakers she likes better so I can get a chance to use the god d*** things...

She enjoys music a lot, (we even owned a music store for a few years) and listens very loud and casually when alone in the car, but could care less about the audio portion of our media room. She doesn't know what to listen for to understand the nuances of what she hears. She does love the size of our 100" projection screen, but again could care less about the resolution or HD quality it provides. She wants decent sound and has a 3.1 setup in our living room with "her" TV, but I regularly have to switch to the HD tier of our cable choices if I am going to watch something in that room.

I think it has more to do with how she lives a fast paced, high energy lifestyle, keeping the home in order, where I am the more laid back, take a load of those feet kind of guy. She doesn't take the time to appreciate it, she uses music to pump herself up, I use it to unwind. We burn discs for her to abuse, from my pristine originals, since she doesn't take time to protect her copies. She could care less about my vinyl collection too.

She has however been very supportive of my preference for large tower speakers even though she prefers newer, smaller versions. I have 4 sets of towers (Polk, ADS) in our garage.

I did expose her to live concert performances about 9 years ago for her first concert at 43 years old, (John Mayer) but doing so with Row 6 tickets at Red Rocks ruined her for any lesser of a concert experience, so taking in shows since then has been an expensive undertaking on my part!!:D

It's odd that this thread popped up today because I was honestly going to start a similar one myself.

I'm on the bad end of this. My girlfriend HATES (I'm using the word HATES here, Jack) my music and is about as interested in my hobby as she is in watching garbage cans rust. In another thread, I posted how she actually tells me almost daily (when we are together) how much she hates my music. When she comes home and I have the audacity to be playing Jazz, she demands I shut it off immediately and starts complaining that it's giving her a headache the moment she walks through the door. She likes music well enough at times, but just heppens to loath Jazz. I love Jazz. With a passion. She likes top 40, some Rap and 80's/90's music. Her idea of a good time on a Friday night is vegging out in front of the TV and catching up on her "Survivor" episodes she has recorded.

Vinyl? She tolerates it. Doesn't see the reason to go back to analog from CD, and favors the Kloss Model 88 table Radio I have in the living room for background music over my Vintage system. Plus, she can hook up her iPhone to it and listen to her tunes if she wants, but she prefers having the TV on. When we are together I am under the headphones listening to Jazz while she does her TV watching.

Why are we still together? Simple. She stays in Hawaii, and I frequent my other homes often, sometimes for months. Thus, we spend far more time apart than we do together. Otherwise, we'd be history. Also, she travels a bit and is currently gone for 10 days starting yesterday while I play Jazz loud enough for neighboring islands to hear. :thmbsp: NINE MORE DAYS OF BLISS! Then I'm headed to Seattle to play more Jazz. :D

Mine is a Cripple Creek enabler, an enthusiast's dream if I ever did see one. I won't say she has spent as much money on the hobby as I have done, but her purchases have not been insignificant. However, she also taught me how to live debt-free, and the magic of having dough to spend (and to save) as a result of frugality. She doesn't believe in borrowing, period. You buy a house with cash, you buy a car... or audio equipment, or anything with cash, or wait until you can.

She loves to listen to music, and her ex-husband wouldn't allow it... so she's happy with lots of music in the house. Most of you guys probably wouldn't enjoy the music she loves most, which is primarily Top 40 Classic Pop/Rock and Country, but when I play what she likes - as I did last night - then she gets up and dances, with Jumper joining in the fun as I laugh and play the role of DJ from my recliner. I told her last night, "The next song is about you," and played Cat Steven's "Hard Headed Woman." She thought that hilarious because she knows she's hard-headed.

Yeah, life is good, 'cause when you find that hard-headed woman, the rest of your life will be blest.

We've been together 36 years. She still doesn't understand me, much less my audio passion. Few people do.

She, only now, has picked up a couple of cd's that she keeps in her car. We each have separate, dedicated rooms for what ever we wish to use them for. I have made the offer of equipment on numerous occasions but there is no interest. In truth, she really has no hobbies and little interests that she follows. That, as the bigger picture, is what is sad.

To use an audio enthusiast's term, there is a lot of dynamic range between the two above posts.:D

..yes, yes. yeayeah yes!

I had four defactos before I met my wife. Two years average each. No kids which was lucky. There was the odd scare, but in the end, the breakups were easy in hindsight, but still difficult at the time.

The next long term relationship lasted 8.5 years. We shared books, played boardgames (massages for winners...minute/point based arrangements). In the early days we worked together (professionally) at times. Over those years there was plenty of time to iron out music issues. We mostly like the same stuff anyway, except for AC/DC. That's ok. I crank it loud and dance around whenever she is out of the house. Just to blow the cobwebs out of the speakers. (grin)

Anyway, I married that girl in 2011. There are many thanks to be made to members who posted in the following thread. The young gentleman (hmm...terror), pictured in my avatar is the result in part of AK. Thanks again.

If you too kids can't make it what hope is there for the rest of us? Lol

Mine only dislikes it when my friends come over, get stoned and play trip music too loud. Only happens once or twice a year so she will now plan her own trip that day....hers is shopping though lol.
She will hang out by the fire in winter and enjoy mostly soft Fleetwood Mac sort of stuff.

My wife supports my hobby because it makes me happy. Plus she too likes music even though our tastes differ.

To the OP … nice to hear from female music/audio enthusiasts! My wife is OK with my hobby, but doesn't truly appreciate all of it. She thinks its very interesting how the music seems to appear "in the air" instead of coming out of the speakers, but isn't all that fascinated by it. She doesn't mind the time and money I spend on it (a bit plus!), but she is happy to listen to my system and my music from "the other" room.

No, she would be happy with the speakers on a laptop.

She does tolerate it very well though, and that is nice.

Music is our world while at home. No television here. She even seeks out record stores if time permits while out of town. She leaves the equipment end of it up to me.

Yeah, my wife likes that I enjoy the hobby and she can appreciate it to a point...
She has her own collection of records, all bought by me for her (mostly 80s pop/rock and disco).
But, she will never understand why I feel the need to have 1000+ lps and continue to look. But she is never negative about it.
She still is mostly terrified to touch my equipment... Even though I tell her I'm cool with it and that things get damaged and break, that its just part of it.

Only thing I truly wish, is that she'd enjoy "listening as an activity," with me more.

Would much rather a few lp plays than watching tv at night.

While I can't say "no television" as my wife likes a few shows and I watch some of them with her she is a good companion in the LP hunt on a frequent basis. She doesn't "get" the gear thing, but enjoys how it sounds and loves having her own little system (currently a Yamaha CA-1000, Minimus 7w speakers, Nakamichi OMS 7 tuner and a Sony 5 disc CDP) in her art studio. I do have my tube system in a small 2nd floor bedroom that serves as my study/listening room as my tastes in repertoire are broader than hers (though her range expands by the day) and I sometimes like my tunes louder than she does. Most of all she understands the pleasure I get from my audio as I do her fabric/art obsession. All about balance and respect y'know, wanting your partner to feel happy and fulfilled.

She loves music and likes most of the hobby.

However, she hates wires! If the wires get out of hand, I'll find out soon enough.
