Dream Vintage System

Great that you are making progress on your system. I would consider some other tape machines, possibly. I don't know the Akais much, but have read on tapeheads that some are no longer working on them. Being in Europe, the Studer/Revox line is available, excellent and has repair and parts available. Might be other brands, too, that you might want to consider. But if you are stuck on the 747, I'm sure you have done your homework to know it will be a good one.

High goals, BB. Your choice of TT is great, but there are other TOTL DD tables just as good. And I concur with Shadow re the R2R — even Revox's humblest offering, the A77, is truly magnificent. And the availability of parts/service should be a big part of your thinking, with all gear this age. Cost doesn't seem to be a factor in your decisions, and the quality you've chosen is superb — but keeping it that way is a major consideration.

Thank you Mark. I'm really excited.
I was looking into Supra Sword cables. Not extremely high price but good reviews. Any thoughts on these?
The build quality and materials of the Supra Sword cables are impeccable. The only way to know if they're a great match for your system is to try them.

Thx. Apart from performance the design and look of the 747 was a differentiator for me.

Thank you. I have friends in Japan so my thoughts were that in this respect parts should not be a drawback. But the feeling that you are in charge to maintain a piece of history is truly magnificent no-matter how difficult it might be :)

Very elegant!

Is your MX-10000 a 220V model?
Hi Mark. Yes it is a 220V model.
And thank you for the encouragement on the Supra Sword cables. I have received them a week ago and the sound is amazing (of course before I had regular ones so it should be like this :) )

How far back do you want to go. Put the passive crossovers back in my Grands and push them with a Pair of Mac MC 3500's using a New C-22 tube pre-amp my MR 78 tuner, my Thorens turntable and Break out my AG 500 2-4 R2R.. All that stuff would be from the late Sixties and very early 70's, excluding the pre-amp. . Or how about some thing from the late 80's. Two Mcintosh XR 290's with a pair of MC 2600's mono a C-34. with a VPI turntable with a SME arm or better yet a SME turntable. I liked the Mechanics on Revox CD players and I guess I could use my REvox B-77 HS 2/4 and my Nakamichi 682. I would use my MR 80 with this system. IF I could have my MCD 7005 back I would use that, too. I guess my MC 2505 would still work as my headphone amp through the period from 69 till today. A 2000 system would be difficult for me. I was traveling all the time and Hfi was low on my Bucket list. Though I was using different NAD and M&K surround components in my RV's. Great sound for small spaces of a class A motor homes. I wonder what Marathon would say if I told them to scrap their Crestron stuff and I wanted Big M&K and Mcintosh for my new RV. I'll have to win the lottery first...

When I look at the picture of the system, it looks to me like a museum display that is not going to actually be turned on and played, but just for looks. I cannot see any speaker cables connected, and it is not powered on. Does it work? How does it sound? Also, I think it should have more sources connected; at least a digital source like a PC+DAC or CD etc. Playing only that turntable? This setup of really nice equipment with only a turntable is confusing to me. I hope it is actually played, and I suppose with a large record collection if not any other sources. I have the NS-2000s on the sides of my desk (a large wooden dining table) on stands very similar to those in the picture, connected to a computer/entertainment system. I play them all the time with PC digital source for movies and music while I use the computer or sit back in a chair. I don't have a turntable or any vinyl records! I guess I grew up in the digital age and never got into records. The NS-2000s are speakers to spend the whole day with playing, so I really hope they are not just show pieces. Then again, there's better speakers and equipment out there, and for some people, the setup might just be a display toy vintage system just to look at and walk past in the foyer. Either way, enjoy! :)
