Driver question, EPI M202 specifically

Hello,

I have read all the M202 posts I could find, and poked around other restore threads. I don't see an answer, or I am searching incorrectly.

I have finally opened up my M202s to start restoring. I am hoping to just re-cap, clean the dial, and replace the binding posts. If the drivers are no good, I can't afford to proceed, at the moment.

I read here, the tweeters should read 6 ohms when tested. Mine show 4.9. And 5.4 In one cabinet. Woofers read 4.0 ohms for one, and the meter does not move on the other. It reads 1. I have seen no numbers for them in threads I have read.

From what I have read, I am concerned one driver is shot. And, I should move on, to a different set of speakers to recap, for now. This is my first recap.

I have only opened one cabinet, of the 2 I have.

The easiest way to figure this out would be to hook them up and play them. I'd go with an amp you don't much care for in case something is catastrophically wrong inside, but that'll tell you if one of the drivers is shot real quick. I do not know if those woofers are exactly the same as the ones in the epi 201/epicure 20, but my epicure 20's read 8 ohms.

Having one woofer read only 1 ohm does not seem promising though. Even if you cannot right now, those should be very nice speakers if brought back to life and should definitely remain on the someday list.

I have hooked them up in the past. The sound was very thin through the tweeters and nothing in the woofers If I recall. Hence their place on the back burner. This is the first I have looked to repair them.

I intend to keep them. Now I'm just not flush with audio funds, at the moment.

I am going to open up the other one and check the speakers resistance. At least I'll know where I stand.
 
1 ohm is probably too low. Something is amiss there. The others seem right. Remember you are measuring DC resistance with a multimeter, not impedance, so the values can vary.

Thanks...The meter doesn't even bat an eye... very odd.
I 'm finally doing something with these...I think we talked about them over a year ago, in a different situation.

That is a great question. I will consult the manual.

As for the same Woofer. I am not sure.

Needs 2 Voice coils. they crunch when the cone is pressed on.

Trouble finding diameter, to purchase correct size.

Contacted Huw, at Human Speakers. He does not sell the voice coils. Though, was willing to sell me upgraded speakers.

The prices are reasonable, but, I want to hear these speakers, with a vintage amp (Think Dynaco 400), playing very loud 70s Heavy rock. Just my goal with these. East Coast 70s sound. And want to rebuild myself.

The quest continues.
