DTC-790 stops playing

Hello,

I've been trying to repair my DTC-790 dat recorder.
When i put a tape in, the tape loads normal, when i press play the right tape pickup doesn't turn.
When i take the mechanism out and push the black solenoid the both tape pickups run freely.

any idea?

If the tape loads normal, the black solenoid should probably be ok as it has also to release the reels during loading sequence.

I would suspect a weak reel motor (the one with the orange toothed belt). You should exercise it both ways with a 9V battery to clean its inner contacts.

Hello, i tried what hdrobien suggested, i’ve even pulled the reelmotor from another (working) deck, but still the same problem. It’s like there is a brake on the right reel when a tape is inserted, and only when the tape has to go forward. When i put the tape in, i can see the right reel turn backwords.
