Dual 1019 question

DCH

Hey all, I just got this Dual 1019 from a seller on Ebay who said that all the functions worked except manual. Well, I'm not sure that's accurate, as the tonearm goes up and down but will not rotate - in manual I cannot even swivel the tonearm at all.

First off, stupidest question, is there something you can do with a Dual to lock the tonearm mechanism in place for transport that I'm unaware of the need to remove?

Second off, if the stupidest question is answered with a "no," am I right in assuming the whole thing needs cleaning and lubing and I should just dig through countless posts about lubing up a 1019 tonearm?

Thanks.

Just for further clarification, the listing says it runs great and they ran it with a 12" record, with outputs, sounded great etc.

Register on VinylEngine and look for the service guides (motor, bearing, etc...) for the Dual idlers.

The arm is supposed to move freely once you unlock it from the armrest. Did you tried to auto cycle with the arm locked to the armrest as it's what Dual recommended after the TT had been moved/shipped?

Nothing looks bent or broken when you take a look under?

I did not, just did that and it didn't change anything. I can now move the tonearm but it's like unscrewing a cap off something viscous.

They shipped it really well-packed but with the platter on... not sure if that might have something to do with it?

Could be a lot of things, but I hope for you that's not the arm bearings. This deck should be completely serviced or maybe you have the opportunity of asking for a refund as it is not like described obviously...

I'd like to take a stab at it myself but I'm struggling with where to start. I have the service manual, but I'm not really sure what to hit up first... should I clean the tonearm bearings?

Maybe NoTransistors will chime in, I'm not sure I could make experts advices as my 1019 arm bearings were ok. I don't know where you should start. Maybe waiting for real experts...? My 1019 was serviced by a top notch technician here in Canada so I know a bit but prefer to let the professionals do their things :).

Some pics could maybe help the crowd here.

Someone with Dual knowledge to help?

Usually, platter should be shipped separately but I don't know if there is a link with your arm troubles...

Maybe you'd think I'm too careful but no way to ask for a refund? The 1019 is quite common and you could find one in better shape. I hope you didn't overpaid for it?

Take care,

Patrice

Yeah, pics are probably a good idea, hah. My bad on that.

I could ask for a refund, it wasn't particularly expensive for a 1019 in ostensibly working order. The Ebay seller has a long rant at the end of their post about scammers and how they put invisible ink and whatnot so you can't return something different than what they sold you... I might try to get a refund on shipping and use that towards a local repair shop doing an overhaul.

Sure, all grease you see (except maybe in the yellow cam) is probably as hard as a rock. Good idea about the refund on shipping but be careful to choose someone with expertise on Dual changers. Some techs will simply add a bit of lube here and there (not the right way to overhaul these German tanks) and declare a bill of health.

For reference, I've paid 340 canadian dollars for the resto of my 1019 but it was worth the cost. Complete disassembling (all bits I mean including screws and c-clips, plates, levers, switches, etc...), cleaning bath for all these bits, reassembling, lubing and testing. The deck developed a strange noise this week and the tech will re-check and change at least the main bearing and re-inspect for suspect parts, this is real after sale support!

The arm is hard to move manually as I understand?

For reference, just blowing a bit and it should move...

It will need to be adjusted and cleaned extensively. You'll need to get at least a 90% isopropyl alcohol, a bunch of q-tips or similar type of cleaner, and a good grease and light oil for it.

The cam is one of the main culprits with these tables and underneath the cam is an almost spring type metal that helps with cycling. I'd unplug the table, plug it in, and try to cycle the table again, or manually try to do it unplugged. There may have been damage in shipping with the bearing and bracket as well. But it looks like a cycling issue to me. Although I am not a professional. You could also try spraying deoxit in the arm and under the arm to see if maybe there is something caked up causing it to stick. And for what you paid on the table, I would ask for shipping plus $75.00 back. Then it would be worth redoing it through a tech.

On 1 of the 1019's I redid, I had a similar issue and was ready to destroy the table due to anger, but read more and got help from vinylengine and Klaus. Little by little I got it back up and running. At one point the issue was similar to yours, it would pick up then drop back down and shut off. That's a cycling issue. I use Alvania grease on mine with light sewing machine oil, but others use different greases.
