Dual 1019 return issue

I picked up a beautiful Dual 1019, and the only thing wrong with it, is that when the arm gets to the end of an album, the arm doesn't go straight up, and return. Instead, it actually slides back a little in the runout groove, then lifts and returns. It obviously makes an obnoxious sound moving towards the return point, dragging on the groove. If I hit the stop button when it gets in the runout groove, then it lifts straight up, and returns to the tonearm rest. Does anyone know what would cause that?

Has any maintenance been done? Any Dual needs a thorough cleaning and re-lube. The grease they used back then has turned to concrete by now.

Sounds like the trip pawl is not moving freely if it skips backwards when it hits that lever in the runout groove. A full cleaning and relube will ordinarily fix it unless something is damaged or missing such as the ball bearing beneath the trip pawl on the top of the chassis.

I'd suggest to get the service manual and the new lubes and spend some evenings cleaning underneath and relubricating all the important spots (with the correct lubes in the correct amounts.)

EDIT: Fixed the spelling of "pawl".

Tim, I think you're on to something. I Googled the issue, and there was a guy with the exact issue. Here's how he fixed it, but I'm looking at the service manual, and don't see anything called a pawl or pall. Does anyone know what part numbers they are?

"Fixed and working like a charm now!

I believe the culprit may have been sticky trip pawls (thank you DSJR). Before any attempt to build up the stuerpimpel, I wanted to rule out any cam issues. I removed the cam, inspected the ramp area and removed the pawls as they were sticky with a very light coat of grease! I cleaned them in alcohol and let them dry thoroughly. I reinstalled them dry and she now works like a charm. Though I don't recall applying grease to them back in October when I first rebuilt this table, I must have...'

I doubt that it is the steuerpimple. If it was, then the arm would have trouble returning properly. I think I am hearing that it was having trouble in the runout groove which is before the steuerpimple is engaged.

In terms of lubrication, I am working from a flawed memory but I think you want the trip pawl to have zero lube on it. The experts will come along and clarify. And actully if the previous owners or service guy put lube on the trip pawl, that might be the cause of your problem. The lube may cause enough drag (due to viscosity and stickiness) to cause the behavior you are seeing with it not flowing through to the end of the run-out groove.

Tim, do you know what the part number is for the trip pawls? I have the service manual, and there is nothing that goes by that name. According to a guy who had the same problem as me, he said the same thing you said. The trip pawls should be grease free, and are supposed to work with no lubrication.

Another reason this will happen is hardened grease on the lift pin.
Acts like glue.
Easy fix.
Thank you, I'll clean the lift pin. Do you know the part number, so I can find it using the service manual? The weird thing about the issue, is if I put the table in manual mode, move the arm to the beginning of the runout, lower the arm into the runout, then it works perfectly. There's no drag backwards, and the arm lifts straight up. It only drags backwards in the runout groove when playing a full album.

The lift pin is directly above the stuerpimple.
Remove one clip on the control arm axle.
Remove axle. The pimple is right there, embedded in a copper leaf. Release leaf.
Lift pin and a small spring come out.
If pin is glued in place from old lube, it will be obvious. Clean. Apply drop of oil. Reassemble.
Be certain to place tip of control arm in gear track and not anywhere else.

The pin came right out, with no resistance. Here's the top of the pin. Does the steuerpimpel look okay? There was some grease on top of it, which I wiped clean, and there's grease on the arm where it hits the steuerpimpel. Should it have grease on it?
