Dual 1019 return issue

Scuffing up the paddle is an incorrect action. These paddles have a finish like emery paper and scuffing it up puts trenendous stress on the pimple contact surface.

The first 1019 I ever rebuilt was in 2010, a gift to my daughter for her twentieth birthday. I resurfaced the paddle in the same manner as mentioned above and the table has been spinning flawlessly with no problems ever since. In this case as well as the 1019 I did for myself a few years ago, after cleaning the paddle surface you could see a noticeable arc where the pimpel had worn the surface down significantly. There is no way that a light, careful cross hatch resurfacing is going to introduce "tremendous stress" to the pimpel contact surface. Perhaps if one were to grind the paddle with 80 grit and use no grease, I could see this as being an issue.

The subject has been brought up many times over on VE. I don't think it's quite the issue you're making it out to be.

I see this all the time on 12xx models. The 10xx uses a harder material for the pimple, but I still absolutely will not use abrasive paper.

There's a very well respected member over at Vinyl Engine, who has put together a service guide for Dual turntables. It has 10 years worth of info that he's gathered, and he also recommends scuffing the surface, if it has become smooth and shiny. He recommends a small amount of grease on the arm after scuffing. It's an excellent guide for working on a Dual.

The “grease” is not just any old grease though. The recommended grease creates some sticky friction for lack of a better term. Can get the recommended grease, all the lubricants, on eBAY in complete kits. Put some slippery make everything slip and slide grease on there its not going to like it.

All the Duals I refreshed have been sold. For one of those I re-made the cross pattern on the black plastic paddle. I did not have one whose paddle was metal.

I have a new pimple that fixed one 1019 and another that did not. I tried the 600 grit emery on the paddle with no joy. I am very curious about trying "adhesive graphite grease". Is there a certain name that I can search for?

there has to be an underlying issue. Generating more-than-designed force by making the paddle-stick touchpoint more grippy, should not be the way forward. Find and fix the reason why the arm needs more force to move.

Thank yo for your reply. I can use manual to set tone arm and play records and it returns to stop after play, all good. When I use auto the tone arm moves to the beginning of record, doesn't drop but momentarily stops and then continues and drops mid record and plays from there.

It WAS an underlying issue. The pimpel that I installed was not pushed all the way home. Reseated it and no more sliding. Hopefully it will not reoccur. Thanks for having me take another look!
