Dual 1019 vs. Dual 1229

I currently have a Dual 1019 that is in perfect working shape and sounds fantastic.

Recently, I came across a Dual 1229 that needs a little work and I can buy it as-is for $30.00. It has the base and head-shell/cartridge sled but no dust cover or cartridge.

I have resurrected six Dual idler drives in the past, including my 1019, but I am new to the 1229. Sadly, I only have room for one TT so it's a "one or the other" kind of situation.

So, would you keep the 1019 or would you put in the time and effort to restore the 1229? Is the 1229 inherently better that the 1019?

FWIW, I will be using an AT LS-400 cartridge and I listen to mostly rock and roll. One of the things I love about the 1019 is that it really does well with bass and has a forceful presentation. Is the 1229 in the same league?

Wow a Dual 1229 for as little as $30 I say go for it and try it and if you don't like it you can always get your money back as long as you don't go to the extremes with it. I have a 1219 being reworked as we speak. never heard the 1229 so maybe some other 1229 owners can step in on that..
 
I sold Duals when new with a special bias toward the 1229. It had a full-sized platter over the 1019 and a better arm, IMHO. All Duals, however, are whisper quiet when fully restored as new and the controls all operate with a solidity and sense of purpose that no other table exhibited until the advent of electronic controls.

The 1019 has a bit more boogie, and the 1219 a bit more finesse. I wish I still had mine. I liked a Stanton 600 or Shure V-15 II cartridge on the 1219 and loved a Shure M-44 on my 1019.

I think thats about what it boils down to.
I am using a 1019 with an M44/N55 stylus at one end of the room and a 1229 with an Ortofon OM/Digitrac 200NE stylus at the other. I admit I have never actually put them head to head, but after using both for years, the above quote certainly covers it as far as I'm concerned.

I agree with Isotonic. Both are great fun, but their presentation is different. Some may prefer one and some may prefer the other.
 
Have had both! Married to all Duals! Wish I had more space! Have a 1219 and the 1229. A 1229 for $30 is a deal. Have done many. I like the looks of the 1229 with its 12 inch platter. Speed is dead on. Have a V15 type II. Fix it up and run it side by side with your 1019. I am lucky and have room for 4 Duals. The 1219 gets the most play time. Lives in my bedroom. It's been a fun ride fixing them up and playing records. Got a 1219 that needs and new start switch. Another project. Go for yours!

That's a good way to put it Isotonic. I have two 1019's and a 1229 (as well as a 1009 in a mono system). I like the full sized platter and the strobe on the 1229 but I think I enjoy listening to the 1019 more. It would be a tough call if I were forced to choose between the two.
 
I have two 1019'3, a 1219, and a 1229Q. If you forced me to give up all save one, I would hang on to one of my 1019's.

a 1219 for $30 is worth it especially if it has the cartridge sled, doesn't matter which you prefer. I'd rehab it and throw a cartridge on and then if you still prefer the 1019 pass the 1229 onto someone who needs it. It's not like you can lose money on the deal.
 
Be sure to check out the condition of the single/multi play mechanism. They tend to get stuck and will break if forced. If that is broken it renders the tonearm useless. At least I haven't found a way to repair them, short of replacing the outer gimbal.
 
I think "slam" is the term I've heard thrown about. There's something about the whole synergy of the 1019 that just puts out nice, hard but clean bass. However, I'm listening to some Mendelssohn (Midsummer Night's Dream) right now on a 1226 (little bro of the 1229) and am not noticing anything lacking in the bass department; it's rather nice. We're talking degrees here.

The rhythmic or transient aspect of music is slightly more pronounced. Rhythm instruments seem to pop out of the sound stage. It doesn't change the music or recording, it just features these aspects a little more. Some music, like Earth Wind and Fire, for example, excels in this domain. The Dual 1019 is an ideal record player for an Earth Wind and Fire album.

On the other hand, some music is beautifully recorded with subtle spacial detail and complex harmonic interplay. Respighi's Fountains of Roam recorded by Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony is rich in this way. The 1219 would be a better choice for this sort of music.

Well stated. I like both too. Meanwhile, my 1019 expresses Gratitude and my 1219 just says merci!

Well, I went to check out the 1229 today. (Actually, it turned out to be a 1229Q.)

It is totally filthy, the single/multi mechanism is stuck, the platter is all bashed up and it reeks like smoke. At this point I'm inclined to pass on it as I think it will take too much time and effort to make everything right with it.

Oh yeah, the tonearm was pushed past the arm rest and wedged down against it on the far side of its travel.
