Hey all, I am new here. I have a small record collection i accumulated very quickly after my cousin played me some classic country on his crosley i immediately fell in love with vinyl. An old lady once described it perfectly to me "it's a warm sound" she said. Well I went and bought a super cheap ion player it stopped working after about 100 miles and no dust cover in the garage just accumulating dust but it was well worth it. I ended up trashing it when I moved and I haven't been able to listen to a record in about 2 years now.

I found myself a dual 1019 for 30$ and it works beautifully it's a tad dusty and I'm going to clean it up a little but I've tested it and its fully functioning. The cartridge has nothing on it I don't know the brand so I can't balance it correctly. The dust cover has a small hole in the corner where I can see it was dropped but at least it has one looks to be all original, the plinth says dual on it I haven't seen or found another like it. I'm really stoked on this thing. I got a couple of Makie mr5s for 85$ used and I'm picking up a art djprell pre amp tomorrow. Said and done 180$ for everything. Granted I know many of the people on here have very beautiful expensive set ups I'm more that happy to just have a record player again I've been torchered without it.

I can't wait to hear this thing rip!! If anyone has any input for me or any comments on my set up maybe suggestions ect I'm open ears. Maybe some one can suggest a way for me to understand the cartridge brand and is it hard to find a dual brand plinth? Like i said I just haven't seen another one.

Welcome to AK. Many people love the 1019.
You can get the owner and service manual by logging into vinylengine.com.
Show us a close up picture of the cartridge and we might be able to identify it.
For best results, you will want to get a new stylus once you know what cartridge you have. Then check the alignment of the cartridge (check the manual or vinyl engine tools tab). And most of all, clean your records.
 
Congrats on the find, and welcome to the Dual club! I dont see many 1019 with those dust covers.

I would suggest checking if any noise comes out of the platter bearing,motor and idler wheel. If there is noise that means metal to metal contact = wearing the bearings. Those are quick repairs, and we can help you sort them out so this 1019 will spin for another 60+ years.
 
My expectation is that Dual's always have damaged lids. I've had my share of them.

Never a 1019 but several 1009's though. My favorite is the first edition from the early 60's with the white lever caps and coin slot cartridge slide. I have two and use them both.

And from what one can see, your cartridge looks like an Empire.

Pop off your cartridge carrier and see what's on the cartridge's underside.

The thing runs smooth no noise no, grinding, nothing rough about it it's the epitome of smooth. I am amazed I thought it was made in the 70s but I read they were made in the 60s. I'm blown away at the quality of this thing. They just don't make anything like that these days. When I saw this guy wanted 30$ I had to swoop it up I had been looking at duals and found the 1019 was sought after so I got lucky.

That looks like an oldie. Worth keeping and using for sure. I love old cartridges. For my 1009's I have 5 cartridge sleds all with more or less period correct cartridges on them. Many times I find them more satisfying to listen to than others I have from the 70's & 80's.

I just have two ADC's - newer than yours. Wouldn't mind having one like that myself.

Guess I didn't do bad for 30$ then.
 
I'd say not bad at all.

There were altogether five 1009's that I've bought. The first three were $10. $20 & $25. The fourth was included in a lot with three other turntables. The batch cost $65 so not much for the 1009. And all the 1009's had interesting cartridges.

The fourth 1009 was from CL supposed freshly reconditioned by a shop. That one was $150 but not as safe a bet as I was led to believe. I just didn't feel like digging into another changer so paid the price for restoration completed. A week later it became needy again. And the supplied cartridge was nothing special. Just one of those "yellow" Audio Technica's - a brand thst interests me not in the least.

In my case and hopefully your's, the best bargsins are the best tables.
 
You did great for 30 bucks.
I just finished restoring one that I got for 100.
Like you I’m amazed at the quite operation.
Great table.

Let's keep the fingers crossed haha. I have an odd set up I know is not preferable to most audiophiles what with my powered monitors and preamp. If I had the funds and space I'd have gone the passive rout with a reciever and a phono line in. Today I bought a preamp finally it's a bellari pa550 not a bad deal I got it 50 off tax and fast shipping it came to 100$ so I've now spent more than I ever wanted to but preamps used are hard to locate and I need one with volume control that bellari is the best option within price range. I still need new RCA's, the ones I had laying around are no good they are shorting and in bad shape so looks like I'll be about 300$ deep now still not so bad.

How do you know the difference between mc and mm?
 
I spent way more than $30 on a restored Dual 1019 and it was worth every penny. My favorite turntable out of all that I've owned. You're lucky you found one that wasn't seized up with old grease. If you ever have trouble with it, the 1019 has a loyal following and there's a few reputable repair shops that specialize in their repair. There's also lots of information to be found on https://dualcan.tumblr.com/ and https://www.vinylengine.com/.
 
I got the same one a few weeks ago.

Also working in all aspects. It’s in nicer condition than my other 1019, so I’m going to let the old one go. I’ve kept a 1019 over a 621 that I also really liked. I’ve had quite a few others over the years, but the 1019 is my favourite. Mine has the same dual plinth as yours. It is small, and although I got a dust cover, it isn’t quite the right one.

Unless familiar with them, visual clues are hard to spot. MC's tend to be pricier than MM's. Unless you're planning on dropping a couple hun or more, you'll encounter MM's.

But when in doubt, Google the brand and model. In addition to initial price, there is a greater cost of ownership involved with MC's. A few exceptions but they need sending away to replace a stylus.

I had two MC's. Didn't care for them, could not justify them, got rid of them. I'm strictly MM.
 
As a rule (though there are a few exceptions) moving coil (MC) carts do not have removable styli and have a lower output voltage. Yours certainly looks like a moving magnet (MM).

Now the stylist is the needle itself right? You have cartridge and stylist is that correct?
