Dual 1219 auto start/stop issues

Go here and download the Cam and Cycling problems DIY. It runs through the process. In the service manual it is on pg 18, parts 231 and 232. They are on the opposite side of the cam gear as posted in the pic. They have to move freely but there has to be a bit of stiction between them. You use high weight shock oil to do this. The DIY guide explains it in detail. Also if you havent look in the VE database and look up the 1219 and go through the DIY service guide. It is very helpful in explaining things.

Hi all. I have a similar Dual turntable. I have two issues with it. One is the the arm is no longer returning to its resting (off) position at the end of the record, and therefore the turntable isn't shutting off automatically. This is after some guy tried to fix the other issue I'm having. I can't figure out how to make the arm go back to "off", and the record player auto shut off. Any help? The other issue I'm having is that the cable that connects the turntable to the amp is responsible (I think) for a deep monotone sound that happens frequently when a record is playing. If I jiggle the cable around a bit, I can get the monotone sound to stop for a bit, but it'll come back eventually. Super annoying. Any help with that?

Welcome to AK. There many posts here to address the issues you are having. Your first issue is likely a bad stuerpimple. They go bad on 1200 series Duals. The piece looks like a pencil eraser. There are posts here on how to replace them. Eprey lists several. Don’t get the Chinese ones. They’re crap and don’t work. There is a seller out of Nebraska. These work. While inside I recommend removing the old grease on the big gear using a Q tip. I regrease with Lubriplate grease. Is it turning off and on when move the arm back and forth to the resting post? Great if it works. Sometimes they won’t turn on or off due to dry grease. Your second issue may be your audio cables. The original cables were crap. Get rid of them. Second cause could be loose wires on the cartridge. They can loosen with age. Third, check the contacts on the headshell/sled that the cart is mounted to. The contacts with age can corrode. I use a Q tip to clean them with contact cleaner. With the sled removed you will see a small circuit board on the arm. Clean that with contact cleaner. Sometime that tiny circuit board likes to move down. Gently push it up into the arm. One of my 1219s likes to move and I loose a channel. Pushing it up and the channel returns. There are two types of headshells on the 1200 series Duals. The TK-14 have clips that make contact when hooked to the arm. They are crap and I replace these. No matter how much I fiddle with these they always like to loose a channel or hum. Later sleds (TK-24) used pins for their contacts. They can be cleaned carefully as mentioned above. With age the plastic can get brittle and break while cleaning the contacts. If either give you trouble replace the sled. Don’t buy the Chinese ones. They are crap. Get the one made by BEST! They work great. Using them in my 1219 in my avatar and my shop 1229. Seth (notransistors) here on AK help design them. The pin contacts are beautiful as are the wires to the cart. Hope these tips help. It will get you started.

Thanks Eric, that is a lot to digest. I've never done anything like taking apart one of these and fiddling with it (also I'm a girl - lol). Is all of this complicated to a newbie? Or could I figure it out, do you think?

Interesting - this was actually my first thought, but actually that I might have OVERLUBED the cam when I completely cleaned it (at least what you can clean without disassembly). I really hope I don't have to take the cam completely out - pretty afraid of never getting it back to even where it is if I do, but glad to hear that yours does work perfectly now!

Overlubrication is most likely your issue. And gummed up lubrication is a maintenance issue on old Dual classics. re: The Dual service guides on VE, those were written by Klaus Adlhoch, the director of repair and customer service, at Noresco of Canada. Noresco was the official importer and agent for Dual. His forum name is DualCan. He was factory trained on servicing Duals. And is very friendly and gives solid advice on all Duals from 1000 series through Schneider era.
