Dual 1219 Motor Constantly Running

I have been restoring a later model Dual 1219 for a friend, I have done the usual stuff such as removing all of the old grease and relubricating those parts. I have put in a new washer for the single/multi leaver and almost everything is working accept one thing. The motor will constantly run, as soon as I plug the power cord into the wall the motor turns on and won't stop running. I have made sure that the wires are all on there correct posts int the terminal box. On another thread on audiokarma I read that if the capacitor has gone bad this could be the culprit. I tested this theory on my parts 1218 unit that has the same issue. Even after I desoldered one side of the capacitor, the motor would constantly run if it was plugged in. I will include pictures of the switchbox and power plug of the 1219. If anyone knows whats causing this issue please let me know.

Thanks,

If I am not mistaken that lever which goes into the box can be causing the issue. Check if it moves freely and check the connections.

And examine that lever activating the power switch. it pivots on an axle and must be removed to clean and re-lube.

It may move as it is just not as freely as it should.
Thanks for the reply! The lever does move freely. It moves just as much and as my restored dual 1229Q’s lever moves.

but did it fix the constant run?

Did you clean each contact point with deoxit or another contact cleaner?

The cap can affect the speed, I don't think its being used as a break or anything that would/could stop the motor from spinning.

Id start with the On/Off switch.

Hi, sadly it did not not fix the constant run. I have cleaned each contact point with deoxit. The motor spins perfectly... it just won't stop. I put the platter on and every function works in single and multi play. I just can't get the motor to turn off.

Best,
Ben

well damn,

have you tired downloading the SM from Vinyl Engine?

I wonder if the on/off switch was bypassed and the table was ran off the back of an amp...

you may just plug it in to the pack of your amp. you may need to take a look at the circuit design and start from there.

Im 99.9999% sure the manual is on Vinyl Engine.

I downloaded the service manual off of vinyl engine, It talks about the shut off but I don't think It covers my topic. I could be wrong but I can't find out

I stand corrected! The manual does say if the motor does not turn off once it returns to rest than the capacitor is broken. What doesn't make any sense to me is that on parts/test unit the 1218 it had the same problem and I unsoldered the capacitor and the problem still happened. I'm really stumped on this one.

check which terminals the power cord on your working one goes to. If someone moved the pin from the constant hot to the switched hot side, it will not shut off.

I just discovered my recently acquired 1009 has the same problem, thanks for all the info by everyone. (I need to find my thread from a week or two ago where I mentioned that issue toward the end....)

That wiring doesn't look correct to me - Looks like the switch has been bypassed.
I've seen this before on Duals where previous users have elected to bypass a defective switch rather than address the route cause.

This is how mine's wired up

Your connection box is different from his. Look at the voltage selector switch!!!

I have a zillion Dual 1219 here. Will check one when I get home.

Is there not a connection diagram inside the cover?

Yeah! I posted the pic for interest.

Key for me is having two pairs of wires stacked on top of each other - doesn't seem right - but happy to be proven wrong

Looking forward to seeing what you find

On any 1219 wired for North America, the two coils have wires paralleled. On most others, they are in series. That coin-operated switch does the work for you.

2 problems. In the 1st pic, you show the ground and 2 power wires in the white connector block. The power wires are next to each other - incorrect. Move the inner one next to the ground wire. A wire pick will free it. Looking at it, the sequence is: ground, power, blank (unused) and power. On the actual power block, you have the wires correctly paired up but they are backwards on the mounting pins. Reverse them.

Well yea removing the capacitor would change the capacitance to 0, if the cap is dead than you probably didn’t change anything when you removed it. :)
