Dual 1219 Project

Last thing in the world I need right now is another turntable project. ;) But, the Empire is working great right now, re-finishing the arm can wait. So, here's the Dual 1219 as found at the GW last week:

And here it is after sanding and refinishing the cabinet, and replacing one of the two missing acrylic pieces with some nice smoked bronze acrylic from Tap Plastics. They were cut to size while I waited, the smaller piece was beveled on the top, and the front edge was polished - all for $12.

I meant to get to Woodcraft today for the bottom Walnut piece (didn't happen), and still not sure what to do with the front edges. Open to suggestions. Anyone know if there was some sort of handle on the front, or do you just use the wood sides to open and close the lid?

I did have a peek under the plinth. The notorious steuerpimpel thingie was there, looked to be in good condition, but had slipped off the shaft, and was lodged between two other thingies. Popped it back in place, but the auto-arm functions are still not working, so there's much more to be done.

I've never seen this cabinet before. It is very nice, you did a very good job refinishing it and finding this place to make you a nice plastic cover.

To answer your question about " Handle on the front" I've found this on the web, hope this help some.

When you get done with this one, you'll have a very nice table with a plinth that is not seen very often.

Someone forced the start/stop switch. There is a set screw for that.
And be careful with the front knobs. There is a small chance that they are not metal [depends on build date]. If plastic, then be extra careful. This turntable can be made whisper-quiet with tweaking. You will soon hear why it is so popular a machine.
I agree on that base....Wow!

I was trying to figure out how to tighten that up, set screw where? The knobs/levers are all metal on this one, serial number is in the "good" middle range, already looked that up.

There is an steel part riding on the shaft of that knob. The set screw is sticking out of its side. Before tightening the screw, make certain that the changer cycle is completed. Then center the part so that it is not lodged in either notch. A spring should keep it centered. You will see what I mean.

East Coast time is 12:38 PM. Nighty-night.

Someone was selling a NOS sealed 1219 at a sale this weekend.
I thought they were asking too much ($75), so I passed.
How does it sound?

You passed? Will be very interesting to see if it shows up on feebay. Anyone like to bet whether it sells for more than $75? ;)

I'm betting someone bought it. These were not your eBay kind of people.
I may go back and check.

I would have snagged it if it was a 1229q

Poor guy does not understand what he passed up.
The 1229Q ....You wanted a 1229Q?

Either unit is superb.

That is like, "The new-old-stock '59 Pontiac Bonneville convertible was $10,000, but I didn't get it, because I thought it was too much money.

Excellent score, I sold an empty cabinet like that, complete and in good condition, for $100.00 last year:

In my haste to find value the 1229q/1019 kept coming up tops.
I didn't put the usual time in to investigate further.

Thats way cheap!

Nice cabinet. Have not seen that one. Looks good. Once done you will like the way they sound. Got 2 1219s and a 1229. Still auto issues on all three though. Fall project or may turn Seth (No Transistors) or Bohley loose on them:D Love the sound they put out.

I have a plinth that looks an awful lot like that one, which DOES have a metal piece attached to the bottom center of the front acrylic piece. Unfortunately, I can't access it now to be sure it's identical; it's packed up and in my storage unit (I moved recently to a smaller place and have been putting the excess of my gear that I haven't sold into storage) I have another one that is similar, which has a metal piece, too. The difference between the two is that the metal on one runs clear across the front; on the other it's only about 4 inches wide, centered in the middle. The one that runs all the way across is more "squared" in form; the shorter one has a curved "handle" part that sticks out.

:scratch2: Why not search online to see if you can find a match, and unless you're being a stickler for authenticity, just make what "works" for you. Any handle that looks good and is functional should be fine... or just do without, using the side panels to lift the lid up by. You're the one who will live with it, so do whatever suits you best.

That's an interesting kind of cabinet. Somewhere I saw a picture of one before.

Listen to notransistors. He's one of the top dual techs around here.

Thanks for posting the pics.

I listened, just tightened the screw, and the lever is now engaging the auto-start at 10 or 15 degrees. Much better.

Now if I can just get the auto-start to actually move the tonearm left. Moves it up, hesitates a bit, sets it back down and shuts off.

I can manually start things rolling, but there's a noticeable amount of resistance getting the arm from about 5 degrees to just over the platter. Not sure if that's normal...
