Dual 1226 hum

Well, I feel like a dumbass.
Disconnected the ground wire and instead of hum I got this loud pulsing mwow-meow-mwow sound. Cleaned a bunch of black crud off of the head shell board and still had the same noise.
Then I realized that one of the wires was almost completely disconnected from the cartridge- reconnected it and that fixed the loud hum. There is still some low level hum/static that lowers in volume when I touch the tonearm or any other metal part of the table, gonna try to figure out what’s causing that when I go through it and lube and clean it.

I'll check my 1226 w/M91ED tonight to see if mine exhibits the same problem. I have mine hooked to a Fisher KX-100 Tube amp (vintage) and the ground goes to the tube amp, so my configuration isn't going to be the same as yours, but I'll report what I find anyway.

I don't know if the tone arm is grounded on these units. I'll see if I can figure that out too.

I can say that the cart puts out very low level signals (millivolts or microvolts) that get amplified a lot, so any noise introduced at the turntable gets magnified all out of proportion in the phono pre-amp section. Touching the tone arm can make it a little like an antennae (presuming). If it picks up additional noise from nearby AC then that might be part of what you are describing. If the tone arm is supposed to be grounded, but the ground is missing that might be an issue. (Maybe an expert can chime in here.)
