Dual 1228 Base Difference?

Hey guys tell me more about the "anti-resonance plates" that were not shipped with Duals. Where was it, size, wt. etc.

I have two 1209's, one each 1218, 1226 and 1009. I just got a 1019 from fellow AK'er Krimney [ I still need to pay him lol ] It is the one I always wanted due to the 7.5 pound platter. As I have posted before besides beefing up the base take the springs out from under them if well isolated to start off. I think they are giant killers with this done. Cheap easy way to bulk up is to put aquarium gravel in seal tight baggies in the bottom of base. I have 5 pounds in bottom of mine and a piece of 2X4 inside down each side. I am using the deep old base that has the veneer sides on the dust cover.

Oho! Gravel in baggies!! What an idea:)!! I wonder if this will help with my PlastiCrap® base....
These anti-resonance plates I think were made of lead and fastened to the underside of the steel "motorboard", Rybeam. Maybe this explains some of the holes I see?

Cut out in an irregular shape to fit flush with plate ? I have considered adding some of that stick on sound absorb stuff the kids use in car doors.

The sand idea is cheap and easy, of course each little grain is a vibration absorber ! 100,000 little helpers !

I've never seen them, but I imagine that'd have to be the case due to the levers and gears and wires and such, to have them in irregular shapes. And the holes would be maybe for mounting straps of some sort. Maybe stuff like putty, or great big slabs of blu-tac would work too, or the one-pound lead solder sticks I see now and then at welders' supply houses....

If you recall, I applied roofer's flashing tape to the underside of the chassis. I post both here, and at The Asylum, so I do not know what tweaking ideas I have posted where.
Home depot sells this in a roll. It is self-stick tar/asphalt tape with aluminum backing. Roofers use it when installing skylights. This stuff is cheaper than the mats for cars, and possibly the same.

All the Dual 10xx series machines have one or two thick pieces of lead bolted to the chassis.
The newer units only have lead, if not imported by United Audio.
On the Dual 1219/1229/1229Q [not from U.A.], the only lead was a cube bolted at the right rear of the chassis.
You can try self-stick wheel-balance weights, or, as was mentioned, welder's lead.
A great place for the asphalt tape, is around the rim that the idler contacts[but obviously the outside of the rim, so that the idler doesn't touch it].
I also fill the hollows of the platter edge, with silicon sealer.

Edit: I install Blu-tac [Loctite mounting putty] between stylus grip and body, between cartridge clip and arm-head, between cartridge body and cartridge clip, etc. These particular tweaks have a dramatic effect. You may feel that they deaden the sound just a little too much, so it is a matter of taste.
Also, on the Q, you need to gently pry off the chromed decoration that sits upon the arm head [it is crimped in, and rattles], and glue it back. Not necessary on the other models, as the decoration [a black mesh, of sorts] on those is better fastened.

Later, I have things to do.

An old isssue of Van Alstine's newsletter recommended "Plasti-clay" as the ideal and cheapest dampening material for speakers baskets, baffles and TT bases. Especially recommended for DQ-10s. Can't recall the issue but found it free on the Net. Yet to find this stuff but likely available at a craft's or kid's toy store.

This is a great fourm! I ask a simple question about the base[plinth] of a 1228 and I learn all kinds of info about Duals turntables and the advantages of a heavy base/chassis and insulating the table.
Just think, people that just play CDs or MP3s have nothing to do or think about. Nothing to tweak. How dull!
Thanks everybody, I have something to do this cold winter. Tweak my 1228 for better performance.

Does Chattanooga get as cold as N.Y.C.? This week has been in the teens; about 20 degrees below average.
If anything, it sure is more difficult to spell.
Good luck with the Dual 1228.

No, Chattanooga is not as cold as NYC. It was only 39 today. Chill factor 35. Most of the time the humidity is high making it feel colder.
Back in `81, I was in Elmira the first week of January and it was 17 below zero with wind blowing 45 miles per hour. NOW THAT IS COLD!
The 1228 sounds great now. It can only get better.
