Dual 1249 tonearm disassembly problem

My Dual 1249 tonearm seems to suffer from the same issue discribed in this thread: https://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/dual-1249-tracking-problem-help.258117/
Basically, moving the single/multi lever breaks a dried out rubber part and as a result there is some resistance in the tonearm that doesn't allow it to track correctly.

I followed the steps in the manual to disassemble the tonearm and find the problematic part, but I can't remove the aluminum plate (part 240). It feels like there is something holding it in place, but I've checked many times the manual and can't understand what I'm missing.

Problem solved. It seems that the bearing compl. (77) was stuck because the rubber washer (242) is dried and stiffened.

Also has the SM-840 motor which is defective. Will spin intermittently at double speed. Need the SM-860 motor.

Did you already break the deering ring at the base of the arm? It's a plastic ring around the base of the arm where it goes through the plinth, and it's what breaks if you try to force the lever.
The dried grease and hardened washer prevent the arm height lever from moving but forcing the lever breaks the arm.
Repairable, but very difficult. The 1249 uses a different deering ring than the 1219/1229/1229Q also.

Yes, I removed the tomearm and found that both "ears" of the dearing ring were broken.

Now the only option is to replace it with an original if I ever get my hands on one, or with one of the steel replicas that shapeways is making.

The original dearing rings are almost impossible to find and the replicas are quite expensive, so I have to think what I'm going to do.

Dual didn't make the dearing ring as a separate part. What you have to look for is the entire yoke. Something like this:


This part is for the 1229Q. You can see the intact ring. I think I paid about fifty bucks for this from dual-parts.com or something like that. I picked up three CL Duals in November of 2018: 1218, 1219,1229Q. The 1219's single-multi play lever was frozen but the dearing ring was intact.
I was able to repair it fairly easily. But the ring on the 1229Q was broken.
If you go the brass 3D printed route, get yourself an account at Vinyl Engine. Tons of great material there with pics. Accounts at VE are free.
Another thing you can try is to remove the spring at the base of the arm, clean all the grease off of everything, and epoxy the arm in place.

I already checked the dearing ring support thread in VE and they only point to the Shapeways website to order the 3D printed version. I don't know what extra benefit would I have from signing up with VE.

The dearing ring was a clever idea but the execution was lacking. That ring never should have been made from plastic. Or even better yet, Dual should have rigged up a two-piece platter mat that the user could make thicker for single play, thinner for multi-play.

Thanks for your kind offer but I'm afraid that the older dearing rings don't fit the 1249. I guess I'll check with the VE guys for more info on the 3D printed part.

Pictures always help me, and I don't think I could have repaired my derelict Duals without them. For example, I couldn't for the life of me figure out where the dried out rubber ring was until I found a German website via VE.
Anyway, good luck. If you've already got the arm off, the Shapeways part should do the trick and it'll last longer than the plastic part.
