Eric, Very generous, but do you understand how freekin' expensive postage to and from Australia can be? I bought side marker lamps for my car, and 2/3 of the cost was shipping. This was for a package only weighing an ounce. Shipped with DSL.

REALLY appreciate the feedback guys!! and the generous offers if I had been in the US.....pity huh? I will check out that play/multi lever and get back you all.....praying I do not have an issue......on the 50Hz voltage - assuming he rewired/ modified worries me - can I check anything myself?

For 60 Hz, motor coils are connected in parallel. For 50 Hz, they are in series. Difficult to easily see if the power connector block has that optional 50Hz/60 Hz selector switch.
Also, the two pulleys do look very different.

You can glue up a cover with plexiglass and the proper solvent glue. Working with plexiglass requires the right cutting tool and the proper solvent and applicator. But simple enough to make real nice projects. Or model one after the one supplied with Empire turntables. They used wood and glass, or wood and plexiglass.

What about having one made? I left the original with a shop that made plastic signs and displays who replicated it. Cost $75 Canadian but it was perfect and brand new! Although 1/2 to 3/4 of that price, the examples of locally available used Dual dust covers I saw were in far from perfect condition.

Well, some progress........I got a dedicated table set up with proper lighting and started buying things I might need.

3 questions - the first 2 are seemingly challenges of been in Aus!

• It does not seem like I can lay my hands on chloroform to repair the plexi dust cover. What are alternatives?
• and, I cannot get the Alvania grease here - I researched and see that "Lubricants made with lithium or lithium hydroxystearate are equivalent to Shell Alvania Greases." Here is Aus that would be "Shell Gadus S2 V100" - is this correct?
• Lastly - looking at the snapped magnesium head - can this be glued with for example an epoxy?

And then....
A bit of breaking news......I have been scouring forums in Aus to see if I can find other Aus based enthusiasts / collectors.

I have come across a guys who refurbs and sells vintage audio as a hobby. He tells me he has a 1219 he is just finishing off and will be selling soon......!!! The report is that it is in full working order, very good condition, full refurbised, incl dust cover.

Can anyone advise a realistic indicative value/cost? Of course it is hard to knock out a fixed price......but assuming it checks the boxes as above, what is a sensible price guide?

And one more, what should I be on the look out of? Anything obvious to ask? He lives in another state but luckily I can get it picked up first hand.....just that I cannot see a demo of it it or have a first hand inspection - aside from some photos......

Hello Wayne. Fellow Aussie Dual aficionado here. I've a 1019, 1214 & a 505-3

1) I'd get a new dust cover or a good second plinth. or maybe wait for a "beater" on ebay with a good case.

2) Shell Alvania used to be available in Australia but they changed the name to Gadus. We used to use Alvania cartridge gun grease at my work and from memory it had a heavy lanolin smell. Anyhow any lithium grease will do.

3) Not sure about the magnesium head.

The 1219 looks clean, not sure about the Pickering cartridge, I put newer Ortofons in all my units.

Dollar values are generally frowned upon in the general forums and might pay to go to the dollar and Cents forum. We pay a bit more for Hi-Fi gear in Australia so I'm not sure how much help you'll get. Having said that Duals seem to be good value considering the engineering that goes into them and one that has been fixed up may be better than fiddling with it yourself.

Thanks for the inputs. Did not consider the issue over the $ values, but yes, see the point. I have the images and will be getting some video of the unit playing and working.......unfortunately the seller is in QLD and I am Sydney - but then the good news is that my wife travels into Brissie quite often and he will collect for me.....just waiting to see how it plays out with the seller. Will keep you posted.

The 1219 pictured is an early model. The height adjustment screw is hidden by the back of the arm. They had some issues with automatic stacking records and the cue. Not sure of the problem. Others here may know. Just finished fixing up an early 1219. I don't stacka records so the I don't have any problems with mine. It works really nice. As I have said, there are variations on 1219s. I have 4 1219s. Unit one is in my avatar. Has the German built wood base and cover. It's a later 1219. My second on is a later model. Don't need anymore but we went through the wars togather. This one is like yours. Broken arm, stuck speed selector, noisy motor stuck on off. I broke the height adjustment on it. Luckily I had a junk 1229. Has a US built wood base. Keeping it. Never had an early 1219. Keeping it too. Performance wise they are really good. The early 1219 works well. Wish you were here. Unit 4, another parts unit too good to junk. Has a broken speed selector. Greased it and set it on 33. Have a headshell coming for it. Everything works, it just needs the speed select lever. Will likely sell as is. Plays on 33 and everything else works. My local record store's owner like 1200 series Dual's. May barter for some records.

The 1219 for sale looks good. Too bad you can't try it. Once gone through like I did above, they run a long time. My 1219 pictured ran well for 4 yrs. I needed to oil the motor. Was surprised. End each day with that one. The bedroom system. Would be curious how much the one pictured would sell for. Good luck.

Hi Guys
Looooooong overdue for an update on my progress: The proposed interstate purchase of the 1219 fell through - the risk v logistics v cost of freighting!! So I am back to focussing on repairing and refurbishing my Dad's 1219 - and better for it!! It feels right to get his pride and joy running again. While that kicks off I have started scoping out a suitable amp. Last night I came across a Pioneer A70 - listed as mint and fully functional! Incl the matching tuner. What is the opinion on the Pioneer A70 (80's model of course!)? Will be taking my Mission 731 bookshelfs along for this. The seller has a Dual CS 505 to play off so quite comfortable for this audition.
Also looking down the road a bit - as for dedicated speakers - it might be a long distance purchase with no audition possible so asking for opinions on Wharfedale Evo 2 -30's for the Pioneer A70 with the Dual 1219??
