Dumpster Finds

I just pulled a pair of Advent heritage from a Goodwill dumpster and tested them out it looks like all they need is refoaming. I have them dismantled and I'm in the process of cleaning up and refinishing the cabinets and refoaming and they should be good to go. However, I also found a pair of Argos speakers that are nearly five feet tall and I'm wondering if anyone can supply any information on this manufacturer. I found a couple of Clips online where the owners Rave about the sounds of the speakers, but they are very odd and I have not found this particular model anywhere. The cabinets are solid Walnut and they probably weigh 75 or 80 lb a piece. Truly beautiful

Argos, Genoa, IL, 1964 a couple products, 73-85 active with speakers and trailing off til 92.

Need a model number if you can find one on the speaker or...

drag and drop a picture or three and it seems someone here will have some info about them.
 
How come are you allowed '' dumpster diving '' at Goodwill.. I'm not even alowed to go DD at my local '' Ecocenter ''

Heritage in dumpster at Goodwill.
You must be way off the beaten path out in the sticks.

You will love those Heritage.
They sound good on everything.
 
Step inside the Goodwill and tell them you'll take broken vintage audio they don't want, and maybe you'll even give them something for it, depending on what turns up. Could be a small gold mine.

Argos made speaker enclosures for public address/installed sound way back in the 50s, I recognized the brand name from their prolific Radio & TV News ads. I wonder if they're old PA columns from an auditorium or something.. would be neat to pop them open and have a look what's inside. Since they could be presumably from between 1950 - 1990, some photos would help clear up the era, and narrow down what they could be.

Goodwill has become a big commercial store, the have their own on line auction site.
Asking the manager to pull stuff off to the side for you is the thing of the past.
Now Salvation Army is a little different i just volunteered to do electronics about six months ago.
Like the Fox is in the hen house..:D
I found some good to extremely good stuff but seriously not as much as i thought.

The thrift finds are just lucky timing. Think of all the good stuff that's passed through on the week days whey your at work! I only get to check my local SA on Saturday mornings and occasionally a GW on my way home from work.
My best finds are two pair of AR3's, the Angelica's, and recently the Vienna Acoutsics Mozart's. Keep at it, the good stuff is still out there!
 
^^^many thrift stores will not take Speakers with rotten foam. I don’t know about GW but local to me “Liberty Thrift” will not sell stuff that they know doesn’t work. I tried to explain that people will buy them to fix but am told many many times things get brought back that do not work and it is a hassle for them. Sometimes it will depend who is working at the time. If they have an eye for quality they may save a pair with rotten foam but most will get thrown away. I had a working ’70’s Silver Onkyo receiver the one guy would not take. (Often take things to Liberty as it is a prison ministry with hopes they may make a few bucks).

Anyway...to the op welcome, and congrats on the cool find, throw some pics up when you get a chance.

Just about every pair of speakers I see in thrifts have no foam remaining, or are cheap Sony plastic cab speakers.

If they do have any foam left it's rotted and cracking, that's when i show the manager and i ask. Can you knock down the price since you will probably be tossing them anyway?
 
I once found a pair of Altec Lansings and Ohm D2 at a goodwill. That was the one and only time I ever found anything vintage there. I told the store manager that there are plenty of people who will buy this stuff to fix, but they just send it to the recyclers. Small surprise all the goodwills in my city closed. They can’t compete with Value Village that way.

Value Village has no problems putting out speakers with rotten foam. I’m playing my Legacy 100a that I just had reformed and they sound pretty darn good! Cabinets in decent condition too, but I’ll need to replace the grill fabric.
 
A Dynaco S-70, PAS 3 and an AR Turntable at my local garbage transfer station in a cardboard bin for electronics. All in original condition. Luckily I knew the guys at the place and they let me dive.
