Dust Covers

How many of us take our dust covers off? I'm seeing pics and starting to think my dust cover is just plain ugly. What would i do with it? Would my TT get dusty if i left it off full time?

There are of course companies that make Dustcovers that are designed to be placed over the entire table for protection, then simply set aside when table is in use. The dimensions and design are up to the end user. Features such as a cut out at the rear to permit cabling to exit, etc.

All of mine (3) are removable and they come off when playing and on when not.

I had a Pro-Ject RPM-1 turntable and if you know the shape of it, you know the dust cover for it is optional ($100) and completely separate. I really didn't care for having to find a place for it when listening, and all the handling leads to wear & tear that clear acrylic isn't know for handling well. I'm moving to a turntable with integrated dust cover and I will rarely remove it for play, to be honest. In fact, don't be surprised if I play it with the cover closed because my TT is placed between my desk and the window where at least two of our 3 felines go to enjoy CatTV.

All personal preference, I need to protect the machine from things (cats) that most of you don't need to worry about. ;)

It's an established Dogma of the Audiophile Religion that dust covers degrade SQ and MUST be removed during play. Bull---t. Unless you put the TT in front of your subwoofer, the cover is sonically neutral.

I have a TT that's almost impossible to design a cover for (M Seiki DQX-1000 with 2 arms, soon to be 3). I made a brave attempt to devise a cover, but as Ken notes "having to find a place for it" rules it out. I also have a Mitsubishi LT-20 with SQ that's 98% as good and fully automatic and has a dustcover that looks like crap. I'll probably replace the DQX with it as soon as the desire is intense enough.

And I'll never remove the cover during play. It has no effect on SQ. Just another Audiophile OCD Myth. Once you buy into it, then EVERYTHING in the room degrades SQ, including you. For the best Sound, cue the LP, and leave.

If you have any iteration of the SL-1200, nothing beats the Decksaver dust cover. It fits far better than the stock dust cover...with no gaps where dust can still manage to make its way in. No gaps, no dust.

I have a Dual 1245 and a Denon DP-31L, both have integrated dust covers. The Dual's hinges have adjustable support tension so the cover can be parked in almost any position from almost all the way down to 90 degrees... the Denon, not adjustable but spring tension loaded built into the hinge that allows it to park before it is all the way up. Thoughtful designs, especially the Dual, I always wondered why TT manufactures didn't take more time designing convenience into the dust covers, having to remove and place it to use the table always seemed like the cover was an afterthought... and some very nice tables were made with covers that had to be removed. High end stuff... that's a different conversation, always is...

Yes, the table will get dusty without the cover during periods of non use... just like any piece of furniture.

I have a suspicion this is a relatively expensive option. Might fit my SL-D2 tho. Have details?

I've thought the same thing since I was 15 and had my first turntable. i think i ran it with the cover on. Still. Can we have a better solution? I'm reminded of the old Get Smart TV show. Whew. Now I'm showing my age. Damn.
