Dynaco A-25 vs. New Large Advent

Hello, I have a oppurtunity to get a pair of Dynaco A-25. I would like to know are they better than my New Large Advent and are worth getting. Both pairs are in great shape including grilles, and every part is original. Thanks!

There’s no clear better. You’ll get opinions favoring either one. Back in the day (1970’s), when I had both, I preferred the original Large Advent for its more room filling bass. I later traded the originals for the New Large Advents which I liked even better. YMMV.

I think this depends on the room size as mentioned above. The A25 is going to be worked pretty hard to fill a large room but they sound great in a bedroom, where I have a pair. The Advents well in a large room with another pair of Advents, hard to beat that sound.

You're right. I had them doubled for a while. If you have room and no significant other complaints, doubled can be great.

The A-25 have a lower and fuller bottom end, compared to the Advents. Very nice sound, but the top end was a bit veiled. I prefer the crispness of the Advents and they were in the master bedroom. I donated the A-25s to AK. Try them and see what you like.

Wow, I've had many examples of both over the years and I've always found the bottom end on pretty much any version of the Advent to be far deeper and more robust than any version of the Dynaco A25 (including the old original ScanSpeaks). I do agree about the top end of the A25 being kind of veiled but IMO they have a fairly nice midrange and an agreeable presence, they'd be great for a bedroom at lower listening levels. Large Advents might be kinda big for the room and they really shine at louder volumes with more power, my 2 bits FWIW.

I have had A25's and OLA's.

I found the A25's to have decent bass, very smooth mid-range at the expense of a little high end sizzle. Great speakers for a smaller room at lower volume levels.

The OLA's had a slightly tighter bottom end due to their acoustic suspension design but they required considerably more power before they came alive. The mid-range wasn't as smooth and the top end bordered on being a bit bright but not harsh. Better in a larger room with more power and louder listening levels.

Not sure I would say the A25's would be a step up or down, more like a step sideways.

We all hear, and listen differently, in the end only you can decide.

I have Dynaco's and Advents. I'm not going to make any comparison, just give you my take on the Dynaco. The Dynaco's are for listening 24/7. Like on Sunday if you want music in the house but not distracting dynamics. They will do those too but they don't insist on it.
I recommend you try them.
Two very different speakers.

I have both, the A25’s at my house the NLA’s at my girlfriends. To me the NLA’s do everything a bit better as in they seem to go higher and lower and definitely have a (larger) sound. That being said there is something about the A25’s that I really like, so much so I would probably choose them over the NLA’s based on they are more fun to listen too.
To put it another way I had a 05 Subaru STI and an 85 BMW 535 at the same time. Even though the BMW was way slower, did not handle as well, and was generally just older I always had more fun driving it over the faster more modern (better) STI.
For a bedroom you may like the more mellow sound of the A25’s, plus they are smaller and look right on stands. To me both are really cool speakers.

I've had both and it's a close call your personal preferences will determine only after your addition.

I sold my last set a while back after I econowaved a set of utility Large Advents per Bauhausler's thread, and was quite taken with them. Their uniqueness, and lack of market value as modded speakers, plus a sound I really liked knocked the A25s out of the mix.

Both are fine speakers, and you won't go wrong with either choice.

I had A-25s and OLA at the same time...top and bottom end was better on the Advent but the midrange was veilded/ murcky... I took out and tried the orange fry-egg tweeter into the Dynaco and it was a great melding.

I have OLAs and a25s. To me the a25 Dynaco are very good for complimenting another pair of speakers that lack bass and midrange. I hear bass and midrange most from a25s, smooth, mellow, but lacking the tin "crunch" of recordings of Metallica and Pantera for example.

The A25XL is a better comparison model, more apples to apples. I have the OLAs and the A25XLs. They have a bit of a different sound, compared to each other, but the OLA is much heavier then the A25XL (weight wise).

The A25s may have a woofer connector problem. I have repaired many of them. The connection at the woofer basket, where internal wiring and speaker coil flexure meet, tend to fall apart. The only way to know is to take the woofer out. It can be fairly easily repaired, but if both terminals have become dismantled, there could be a short to the amplifier.

The Advent may have woofer surround rot. There are surround kits available. Welcome to vintage.
