Dynaco PAS2 Can Cap went fizz pop

I have had this for a year, liked it, did the tone bypass and 1.0 coupling cap thing, really love it now. It has Dynakit heater mod and Dynakit Can cap. Age unknown, but not very old and the can just went fizz pop. Happily I have had the cover off lately and smelled hot parts before the transformer melted. Reading here, survey says can is a chronic fail item. questions are, is stock 20-20-20-20? The Dynakit is 40-20-20-20. I am looking at JJ or CE at Antique Electronic. is the 40-20 ect an upgrade? Or stay with 20 x4? Thanx for your thoughts.

you should consider ripping the can out and installing one of the boards that has everything on it. I just bought the sdslabs cap board for my pas2, will be here tomorrow.
it seems like none of the can caps being manufactured today are all that reliable. plus, the power supply board wasn't much more than the can cap would have cost and in the future you could replace individual caps with regular through hole caps.
the original in my pas2 was 30/20/20/10uf

You could alternatively quote out a new can from hayseed hamfest.
I've used their capacitors a number of times and they are very good at what they do. They are highly regarded around these parts. They'll make you a brand new one to whatever specs you ask for, at a very reasonable fee.

+1 for Hayseed Hamfest. There's been one sitting on my ST-70 for years.
And they are not much more expensive than the usual suspects, with better heat specifications.

I did the dlab thing on a pas2 and it's quite nice. Either solution can be excellent.

I recommend the power board. It solves both the B+ cap and the filament caps.
Several sources , z-psu from erhard-audio comes to my mind. Lets hope that the
transformer has survived.

The boards are handy. Did that with mine years ago. Mine has a different power supply board that eliminates the tube rectifier as well. Not critical to do that but the 12X4 was missing when I got the PAS and I wasn't inclined to buy one.

Thanks all. A big thumbs up for Hayseed, have them in my Magnavox. It does seem that 20-20-20- More of a guideline 20,30,40 for values. sorta like farad fluid....Values are not listed in the owners manual I found. And yes I was also thinking why not 4 caps, like the purple Nichicons that Audio Research uses. Also time to put together the $16 6J1 Amazoon pre. PPS Running my BK Ref 20 for now , ( was just using the tuner) that I thought was pretty good, utterly lifeless.
