I'll put my question up front and backstory is below the schematic.
Do you think I'd get an improvement if I were to install a proper crossover into all eight of these speakers? (not really asking about is it "worth it" since I think I know the answer to that based on the cost and labor)
There...
Hi,
Upon removing my amp from it's cabinet to replace a burnt out bulb, I discovered one of the main filter caps was leaking (fluid actually on top of cap), and it rattles! when shaking. Amplifier was seemingly working ok otherwise. They test as: 34,000uf/0 esr and 30,000uf/0 esr (Mepco labelled...
Hello all,
I’m exploring a possible repair on a Pioneer SA-1490 receiver I got from a friend who insists it was working for him before giving to me. I’d like to save it from the recycle pile but it’s not working now.
Two sentences about me. Although trained as a EE, I’ve leaned on more of the...
Hi Everyone! Just bought these speakers in very good condition, never opened. Just thinking about sense to change capacitors in crossover. All sound good but it almost 50 years. Before i had ss 5050 and after recap those sound exactly the same and capacitors was in very good condition. I want to...
Hello. I’m looking for some hard to find replacement caps for out Kuba Carmen amp. Some I’ve found, right capacitance but higher voltage. I’ve heard that should be fine. Others I can’t find at all. Any suggestions? Picture for reference.
Hello everyone,
I have a Triad Micro Sat 3.0 soundbar. Last night, after playing music at high volume for about four hours, the sound suddenly cut off. After turning off my receiver and letting it rest for 30 minutes, the sound returned, but it was very faint and distorted.
After researching...
I recently was able to buy a Sytemdek IIX that appears to be an early model (steel bottom, teardrop armboard). When the power switch was clicked on nothing would happen. I researched a bit and thought it would be the capacitor but ultimately turned out to be the switch that was faulty. I've...
Hello, I am new to the tube/jukebox world and am replacing all the capacitors on my Seeburg M100C MRA3-L6 amplifier. I have 4 capacitors that are in question. Can anyone help me figure out which caps these 4 are? I think one of them is C25? And maybe another is C15? Not sure what the other 2...
I'm looking to change the high voltage power supply of my mpi-4 as the scope is no longer outputting a display and believe the C301 capacitor has gone faulty which is a .1uf 1000v Sprague black beauty cap it makes a noticable buzzing sound when the unit is turned on. My question is which...
Hello,
I am trying to revive my 1983 Sansui Z-7000 receiver. It has 2 - nichicon 10,000uF power supply caps at 71v, 85degC. 80mm high x 40mm wide. They have 5 pins (separated by 60deg each), only 2 are active (across from each other), spaced at 25mm across from each other.
They have vents on the...
I am working on a rebuild of my SX-1000tw. Most parts are straight forward but there is a capacitor on the bottom side that connects to the ground side of the filter capacitor. I have seen pictures of units without it but several with it. I can just order an axial replacement but was just...
I just installed some Solen caps for my JBLs and they seem pretty bright. Not bad...but bright. Any have any recs on capacitors that can tone that down if i choose to? Daytons?

Hi. I am servicing JVC CD player fully equipped with Rubycon caps CE W type blue and gray bipolar
As they are ca 30 years old minimum I am going to replace them by current good quality reasonable caps.
CD was faulty (missing oscillator due to corrosive action of glue - fully demolished...
What I find odd is why would only 2 caps be glued. Glue is typically clear or tan. But look at the bumps of crud around the one picture. Seems odd to glue these down since 1 is 6.3V and the other is 35V.
Purchased a hobby homemade set of monoblock amp a few months ago in Japan. Unfortunately one of the amps stopped working. Tried to swap tubes, cables, speakers - nothing. When I moved the amp from the shelf, I noticed an oily residue below it. I took a look at the inside amp and found what...
A neighbor gave me an electro voice 1182 a few years back. Right channel works, however left channel is very faint. I’ve identified the problem as a damaged, leaking 50mfd cap in the power amplifier board. This brings me down to the question, is mfd the same as uF? If not, please let me know the...
I have had this for a year, liked it, did the tone bypass and 1.0 coupling cap thing, really love it now. It has Dynakit heater mod and Dynakit Can cap. Age unknown, but not very old and the can just went fizz pop. Happily I have had the cover off lately and smelled hot parts before the...
I am pretty sure these are tantalum capacitors ... but this is my first rodeo with caps in this packaging with this coloring so I wanted to make sure.
They are not marked with either values or polarity. (I can find both via the schematic, but that's not my question here.)
(I replaced little...
I received such great advice on my last post, I figured I’d try this on y’all.
Can anyone identify what this is? It’s feels like ceramic but the markings show are all it has.
This place is great. I owe you guys a beer.
Hello everyone,
I had recently purchased a Technics SA-5360 Stereo amp tuner from eBay. This was after a long break since 2019 I took from my vintage electronics hobby. I used to mainly collect and restore tube based tuners and amps, but recently it has become quite expensive I noticed...
This is my experience with recapping the cross-over boards on my B&W 802 Series 80 speakers.
I’m the original owner of these speakers that I purchased back in 1982. All the tweeter, mid and base drivers on both speakers are still in excellent condition. However the components on the...
I’m a mechanic so I know engine break in time is real. I know camshaft break in time is critical. But how about capacitor break in time?
What about the construction of a capacitor would change over use? What would “break in”? I’ve especially heard this about pio caps. Is this real or is it...
Gone through replacing all caps along with variable resistors on this C-4. Plugged into DBT and the good news is I've got a dim glow. The bad, some smoke came up from the function board near VR123 trimmer resistor. Looks like these 2 resistors are toast (see photo). I think both R257 ( 1.2KΩ )...
I've had a pair of Jensen Coaxials (model h223f) for a decade now. They've mostly just sat around, not making much of a fuss. Minding their own business.
These speakers sound quite good for their age and technology. The woofer is Jensen's 12" FLEXAIR woofer. Apparently these "flexair"...
Why have Sonicap capacitors gone up in price? I'm not talking double, but about 5x the cost of what they used to be a couple of years ago. Just puzzled by the price increase.
Is there any places other thank sonicaft, they can be purchased from?
