Vintage Jensen coaxial question. What the heck is this thingy?

Wolfwood

In the Valley of the Sun
I've had a pair of Jensen Coaxials (model h223f) for a decade now. They've mostly just sat around, not making much of a fuss. Minding their own business.

These speakers sound quite good for their age and technology. The woofer is Jensen's 12" FLEXAIR woofer. Apparently these "flexair" woofers had a longer throw than previous models. I believe they might be Jensen's first woofer designed for ported cabinets.

Speaking of ported cabinets, I decided yesterday that I'd let them breathe on some homemade baffles I threw together. They understandably lack bass response on these baffles, but I can't help but admire the soft and detailed sound they produce in this setup.

Ok, question time. I decided to take a peek under the covers and am not really sure what I am looking at. There is a small ( for lack of a better term ) PCB board where the 1 and 2 wire terminals come in, and behind it there is a big pack*? glued to the inner cover among the wires. Is the pack a capacitor ? How can these speakers sound so good with such an old capacitor? ( if that is what it is )

yeah crossover of some fashion, could be a cap and a choke or just a cap. Likely only connected to the tweeter to keep the lows out of it.

Throw in a modest subwoofer and you will probably have the best sounding speakers in your entire neighborhood. I have a pair of very similar Jensens and will likely take exactly the sam path you are on.
