Dynaco PAS3 noise

Noise of that type is generally tube related but the one thing that caught my attention is the very poor looking ground solder at the old Can base, looks like a cold solder glob….could look better in person? Would assume you tried switching the tubes between PCBs? PBC 6 appears modified…
 
A few questons :
Is it a line input selected ? Is the input shorted ?
Is the covers mounted ?
Are potentiometers firm mounted( nuts fastened ?)
When feeding with a signal source, possibly music, if playing with "normal volume", will the noice be observed if
the source is turned off or input shorted ?

I’ve been using the ‘spare’ input, which is a line level input. But the noise occurs with no input connected. I have not shorted the input. But if the noise were from the input I’d expect it to get louder as I turn up the volume. It doesn’t.

With whether the cover is installed, the answer is yes and no. The noise first appeared with the cover installed. I removed the cover to swap tubes and test voltages. The cover seems to have no effect.

The potentiometers are firmly mounted.

It’s my bedroom stereo, so playing level is on the lower side, about 50dB, normal conversation level. The noise is very noticeable there. The noise is there at that volume setting whether the input is connected or not.

I installed used GE 12AX7s in place of the JJ tubes on PC-5. The noise was still there, maybe a little lower in volume.

Ok that would be something to test with the Decibel X app, just don’t adjust anything between tube change….
 
I recently acquired a Dynaco PAS3 preamp. It has a new pc board replacing the selenium rectifier and associated filter capacitors. There is a slight hiss or hum at low volume. It doesn’t sound like power supply hum. It doesn’t increase when I turn up the volume. In fact, with no input signal the noise goes away with the volume turned up beyond a certain level. Any clues on the possible cause would be appreciated. Could it be a noisy 12AX7 on the PC-5 board? They’re all new JJ 12AX7s. Also the power source has a bucking transformer to lower the mains voltage about 7 volts, a vestige of when I was running Eico 20 amps. Could this be causing the problem? I’m using it with a Dynaco ST-70 which appears to be free of noise with no input from the PAS3.
Strange.
As for noice/hum on line level, as the volume pot is first, noice produced at zero volume comes from the lineboard. If hum
changes when volume is increased is due to cancellation or addition ( depending on phase)

In your case lacking instrumentation i would suggest a different troubleshooting,
1/ solder a short wire between eyelat (2) to (1) and (9) to (1) . This shorts the input of the amp and
eliminates ant mysterious problems with the volume pot (which is cheap and sometimes break in
mysterious ways)
If hum persists, problem is in the board or in the B+ or in the filament feed. Possibly
miswiring of the bass controls could affect hum also.
( if you mentioned hiss i would suspect plate resistors 470k and 100k )
If hum disappears your problem is in the wiring selector volume or balance controls.

if hum remains a second wire could be installed across the 1.2M resistors ( one end of this is
connected to pin7 (grid) on second triode. Thus further reduces the problem area.
 
I suppose that any one of the suggestions could be the source of the problem, but even if the OP were to change some caps and eliminate the hum, would the PAS perform as designed? The only way to be sure is to do a complete restoration. If doing so is not possible, then I would suggest the OP sell it and buy a new preamp.

I have two PAS preamps, one restored maintaining the original design and another with new PCB's. The restored, original design works perfectly, no noise whatsoever and all voltages are spot on. The "modded" PAS worked for a few years and then crapped out, it's been in storage since.
