Dynaco ST70 Reintroduced!

Looks nice. There have been several attempts to resell "the ol Dynaco".

Tubes have seen a rebirth but I wonder how wide that rebirth extends into the general stereo market???
 
hm, seems to hint at a Williamson type front end. Doubt it really is. Curious what its actually using for a circuit, and if its actually any different from one of the various commonly available boards from other vendors.

No tube rectifier either. That should improve output power somewhat if the power transformer has some more guts as well.

Also measurements. I do not see any.
 
With the tube complement, it's likely either a Williamson, a cascode or SRPP driven Mullard, or a LTP driving a diff amp.

Neither configuration is a Dynaco, really (not a Laurent circuit).

I wonder how much it COULD sell for. It has to compete with all the other versions out there (VTA, etc)...

Lots of serious competition in that price range. It would have to be the first ST70 in history, to sound better than a Rogue Audio Atlas Magnum (at least IMHO)...

And the Atlas is 100w/ch too...

Price will alienate great deal of younger generation wanna-be tube audiophiles. Things are bad enough keeping tube amps at home alive the way it is. What a shame. SS rectifier is a good idea. So are the EL34's. Would be interesting info to know why they went with general grade light blue and black main caps (not just because they are "in spec").

Jim, thanks for posting. Interesting, really needs a chrome chassis though. Also, not following the Dynaco philosophy of good performing gear at an excellent price. The LED system for setting bias seem innovative but I like hard numbers from a meter. I'd be happier with a Bob Latino reproduction at 1/3 the price.
 
Do those output transformer still have Hammond labels on them? No issue with Hammonds here, but weren't the original transformers Dynaco's special incrediant ?
 
Just my opinion . At 3Gs this thing will be stillborn. We have a pretty good idea of specs or the original and some of its followers. No specs for this one. I'm trying to remember. I think it was Welbourne that had a 4 tube driver stage that at least in appearance looked like that.

If they didn't wind them in house, they were wound to Hafler/Dynaco specs. Not to say this couldn't be copied. The new production ST-70, etc kits use repop transformers that are supposed to be very comparable to the originals. No idea who actually produces them, could be Hammond, Edcor, someone else. I'm sure Bob Latino isn't sitting there in his basement shop winding transformers by himself. The simple thing to do would be to contract with whoever makes the current repops to make more of them. The d**k move would be to make it an exclusive contract that blocks sales of said transformers to the guys who sell Dynakit stuff currently.

Look at the actual photos of the amplifier, the transformers appear to have hammond stickers just like the transformers you or I would buy from a vendor. I'm not sure why an OEM would want to leave those stickers in place, and it makes me question if the transformers are indeed custom.
 
I see what you mean, but I believe Hammond will wind you transformers to your spec. Its not out of the realm of possibility these are Hammond-produced clones of the originals.

No idea why you wouldn't peel those stickers off before taking a pic though.
