Dynaco ST70 Reintroduced!

It looks like it would be a nice amp. But with everything Dynaco ST70 out there already I don't see how these will sell that great. There are many different boards and complete kits already. Ive even seen four tube Aikido driver boards for the ST70. I do dig the rounded top! Someone needs to produce them for the standard ST70 chassis. :thumbsup:
 
This is amazing news. Just last night while finishing my 4rd Cosmo I posited that the reintroduction of the ST70 would be pure marketing genius.

Then I slipped on my robe, struck my head on a complete set of Reader's Digest compendiums, and did not recall it until just now when the dog was licking my face.

Joe Curcio aka Dynaco Doctor had a four tube board. It was the super upgrade kit over the standard upgrade driver board. I tried it and it changed the "flavor" of the amp. I was never very excited over it and sold the amp. Don't get me wrong Joe had some great stuff. But that board didn't do it for "me".

It SHOULD have but it didn't????
 
Since tubes seem to be a fringe market, I would think that anyone considering a ST-70 would simply do a google search. Coming up with Bob Latino's site cost along would sway the buyer. Oh yeah and the 10,000 positive reviews and customers!!!!

This is pretty interesting! What I find most curious is that this amp has the 'appearance' of the now-historical Dynaco ST-80! By chance I just happened to encounter an 'Original' ST-80 about 2 months ago. Sadly, that amp had blown one of it's regulators.......a small IC chip that regulated one of what I believe are 4 power supplies in that amp! I think it had 2 separate power supplies for filaments.....but unlike the ST-70 it ran a single filament supply to all 4 output tubes, then another 'regulated' filament supply to the driver tubes that was also rectified. Then it had a B+ supply for output.....and yet another HV regulated supply for the driver section. As it worked out, the 'original' owner of that amp traded it to a friend of mine who wanted the chassis....which he stripped. I'm now the proud owner of the OTs, the PT, and the choke. I might add that Dynaco chrome plated the end-bells of the OTs....and even engraved them. They also chrome plated the top end bell on the PT. I can't tell if this new amp is also doing that. BUT, one thing I can see very clearly is that the whole driver section is NOT what Dynaco used in the ST-80!! Will be interesting to see a schematic on that amp when available. I'm kind of an 'addict' to the 'old' Dynaco amps..... but I'd love to hear this one at some point when you get yours and get it into your system!!........lol

I guess i find funny. I've used exactly those words (i suspect we're not alone on this).
That is, i didn't love it but i wanted to love it and i ended up selling it :idea::crazy::D
 
Thats where you start crossing the divide from what is measurable to what is perceivable. Therein lies opinions and dragons, and I do not know which is the more dangerous.
 
3K must be a bad rumor. I wish Elekit would do another run of TU-8300R kits. For 1K that was a good deal.

Bob has been around a while and his version of the ST-70 appears to have stood the test of time.
I just picked up an original ST-70 for my kid, it turned out to have good bones but a bad circuit board. I upgraded with Bob Latino's boards and some other mods. Cost ran a bit more than expected but less than a new Tubes4HiFi unit. I have a very happy kid on my hands.

If the price of the new amp is is the $3K as mentioned above, I'd go with the Latino ST-70 at half the price. Bob appears to have put together a solid dependable amp.

mostly joke, but I meant that differing opinions tends to lead to arguments. Arguments about subjective sound qualities is just a downward spiral. It also seems to end up with people claiming their opinions as fact, and that gets messy too.

Dynaco stuff definitely seems to be deep into the realm of subjective arguments. Just how many times do we see threads about which board is better, etc. The only thing I think we can definitely say about it is that everyone has an opinion. Including occasionally myself, who has never owned or even heard one.

Time to shut up and go back to listening to my deathtrap little German console amp.

The site Isn't really active anymore. But he will get back to you and take questions and orders. Ive ordered a couple custom face plates and rebuild kit for an FM3 tuner recently.

That's interesting since Radial also owns Jensen Transformers.
 
I wasn't specifically referring to a dynaco amp, board, or other. Just pieces that are well liked (sought after?)
I'm good with sharing impressions (which could be opinions). I actively seek others'.
I have come to find that i don't always agree.
I'm totally ok with that.
Also, #s while valuable, aren't the end all in what stuff sounds like. I wish it were that easy. The journey is part of the fun.
One other thing. I also often think if I'd listened to said gear on different speakers
(Ones i don't own) i could quite possibly have an entirely different impression)

Technically, isn't the Dynaco (Laurent circuit) amp based on the original Williamson design with its own twist? That's what I've read about the Dynaco tube amps anyway......
