Early Sansui integrateds, big ADS speakers, and power amps...

Oh and the 7700 I accidentally won is arriving tomorrow. The seller of the crapped out/bait'n'switch 777d on ebay hasn't responded to requests for a shipping label, so ebay stepped in. If we don't hear from him by Monday, I get a refund AND the amp is mine... in which case I guess I'd hand it off to a tech. The 777d I ordered from reverb and maybe paid a bit too much for is also arriving on Monday.

And with that, I am done. If you see me talking about buying more amps, send me to a sanatorium.

Back to A/Bing we go.
Been on this merry go ride too.
No fun
But you are on the good end of it.

Those sticky soft domes will collect any dust in the air. That's why some of the ADS had cloth on inside of thier metal covers.
Yeah but that won't help when there's giant gaps between the grills and the cabinet, as in the towers. If I kept the towers in the garage I would just ask my wife to sew a speaker grill fabric cover that would cover the entire cabinet+grill.

Just got the 7700. Also a mess! Came flopping around in an oversized box. 'Custom' top dented. Volume knob is some aftermarket thing cheaply glued and wired on. Supposed to be fully operational but L channel has no sound in stereo. I nudged the ALPS pot and the thing went into some sort of cycle, the DBT flashed bright repeatedly 2-3 times and I shut it off. Billed as fully recapped but lots of old electrolytics. Reeeeeks of cigarette smoke.

I'm 0/2 on amps bought online.

This time I'm not even contacting the seller. Move directly to 'return'.

Turning around. Looks like you might go from 0/2 to 2/2 free parts machines!
Might try handing this off to a tech, maybe they can fix it up. Same with the first 777d, if the other seller doesn't respond. Now I wait for the 2nd 777d to arrive...

Maybe, you might have better luck on AK's Bartertown.

I don't understand how tough it is to box up an Amp.
Seriously. After I sent my return request the seller said he had it packed tight. - Buddy an assortment of loose packing material (peanuts, paper, foam) does not make for tight packing. It would probably work better to ONLY use double bubble wrap. Inside facing, then enough outside facing so that it's very tight in the box.

But idiocy has no bounds though

@bhairavi if you need measurements or reference pics I can pull mine apart. It's sitting in the "to recap" pile.

TY sir. Will let you know.

I messaged the ebay seller back and said I'd send him some money back if a tech can get it working well and switch out the travesty of that volume pot, but he declined.

*shrug* Thought it was unfair for him to not get anything back.

Big equipment updates for this thread:

-One 777D refunded
-One 777D damaged in transit awaiting refund
-One mostly-recapped 7700 (free to me *shrug*) sent to the tech after a kind AKer sent me a volume pot and case top off a destroyed 6600 for 50 bucks
-One totally recapped but non-working 777 from another kind AKer successfully fixed (blown L outputs), now also at the tech for new chassis-mounted caps (I didn't want to do the work, although it was WORK to convince the guy that I really do want the massive increase in capacitance like LeeStereo recommends)
-One pair of L1290/2s which initially had a problem with weak mids, and after extensive trouble-shooting turned out to just need more solder at the spade terminals on the crossovers. Guy I bought it from let it go for $500 and threw in a Hafler DH-220 for another 150.

That brings us to today:
Drove two hours and bought a nice B&K EX 442 Sonata, 200 wpc, 75A, modded by Musical Concepts. Guy has a lot of hifi stuff and demo'd it on a pair of NS1000M speakers. Gross, I thought. That same Yamaha brightness exists in their speakers too! Then it occurred to me to ask him to disconnect his preamp so I could pipe in audio from my phone directly to the B&K. I'd brought a 3.5mm>RCA with me. I promised I'd turn it all the way down and only raise it a smidge - I just couldn't walk away with this amp if it was responsible for the nauseatingly shiny treble-tastic sound I was hearing. Turned out to be his preamp. Within the first 30 seconds of my first sample track, I pulled out my wallet.

Folks, I am now a believer in big power for the big ADS. High current mosfet is just what the doctor ordered! Brought that B&K home and set it up in parallel with the Hafler DH220, preamped with the 888. Now A/Bing the B&K and the Hafler on my newly-fixed 1290s! Incredible! <insert superlatives here>! Wide open sound, tons of detail. It's a little hard to do a real A/B even though they're on a switch, just because the B&K is slightly louder at the same volume. But it is also more detailed and/or slightly brighter. One of these power amps will go to the other room to help out the 717 with the 1590s. And the empty spot will be filled by the 777 or 7700.

Which means I am now done. Cap coupled Sansui, non-cap-coupled Sansui, 2 pair of ADS floorstanders, Boston A200s when I want even more room-filling, and KLH23s for nice mids with massive bass. I have all I need. Even the garage system got an upgrade today - on the way home I found a pair of B&W 685s on facebook marketplace, messaged the guy that I was passing through, and he let them go for $130. The tweeters were pushed in but first thing I did when I got home was to disassemble and massage them out. The L400s they replaced just weren't enough and sounded muddy when they got loud. B&Ws have that rock sound, and probably are much brighter but tamed by the Sansui 4000.

Oh and it was pouring rain on the way, foggy on the way back, then cleared right up for a beautiful sunset. I also came across the tallest bridge in California, had to get out of the car and explore.
