I have problems with earwax - everything sounds dry, shallow, and unpleasant.

While there are a lot of unproven methods for "improving" audio, I know that Nelson Pass, John Krutke, and several other audio legends have stated the benifits of not having cruddy build-up ruining your audio experience.

Q-tips don't seem to work perfectly, and they're not really good for your ears. Can anyone reccomend a better method?

I've never heard a reputable medical pro advise you to stick anything into the ear canal. I developed allergies at 40, and one of the places they really attacked is my ears. I started with Swim Ear, which is just glycerin and rubbing alcohol. Now I mix my own in the Swim Ear bottles, with a higher percentage of glycerin. You might want the higher alcohol percentage, if you are trying to dissolve earwax, but I like the higher glycerin component because it's always dry in Colorado. I just put in a coupla drops as I'm getting ready to sleep, lie there for a while, and let it drain into a tissue. Works wonders for me.

also. Hydrogen peroxide. just use about a half of cap full. lay down on your side (either side ) pour it directly into your ear . you will hear lots of stuff going on ( snap crackle & pops ) all normal . let it work for about 3 min . turn your head to drain and clean rest of ear canel with q-tips . you will be amazed ! this is the only way i have done it for the past 30 years , im 42 now . hope this helps . just remember ...this is grandma's home remedy..i doubt you'll find this in any medical journal.

Of course, you will have to roll over to let it drain. With me, it just runs right thru my empty cranium and out the other ear.

I use about 4-5 drops of mineral oil. let it sit whilst laying on my side for about 10 minutes, then flush it out with a mix of 60% water and 40% hydrogen peroxide. The water has to be very warm before mixing the HP or the solution will get too cold. After that flush I flush again with warm water. i use a a bulb to flush it out. It comes with most ear-wax removal kits. NEVER INSERT IT IN YOUR EAR CANAL!

DO NOT USE QTIPS either. They can push wax in (no matter what youve heard I know first hand) and cause trauma to your eardrum and make problems worse. DON'T USE EM!

1. Go see a doctor and get your ears flushed.

2. There is an earwax solvent on the market that is almost useful-available from your local pharmacy.

3. AND do not put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear.

from one who speaks with experience I suggest the doctor-don't screw around with your ears

Thermalbum has the right idea. Never put anything in your ear canal, it will only make things worse and increase the risk of you damaging your eardrum. Contrary to what many believe, a certain amount of earwax is beneficial and typically the excess will work it's way out of your ear on it's own. Usually it's only once you start sticking things in your ear that problems start. Your medical doctor can certainly have a look and recommend a cleaning if necessary.

As far as earcandling goes, there is no scientific proof that it does anything at all, other than increase the chance of putting a hole in your eardrum or burning down your house.

When I get a physical exam, the doctors always remark "Sure is a lot of earwax."

There, I've said it, can I go on Ophar now?

What I do is get one of the little rubber bulbs used for cleaning baby noses. Fill with warm water and flush. Repeat about 5 times then do other ear. Two bucks for th bulb and the warm water comes from the tap.

It does make a difference. I do this about every month or so or before live music performance.

i have used all the methods mentioned here, and one things for sure, having allitle ear wax is a good thing ,espicialy if your married.
I have found the cones to be the prefered method for my buildup.
I like the idea of sticking a wick in my ear and lighting it like a fuse, so does my wife.

Earwax is better than no eardrum!

My wife has been a pediatric nurse for 37 years. Sadly, more than once a mother has come into the clinic with part of their childs eardrum on the end of a q-tip. Best to never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear.

Helped for me... and it was my doctor that recommended this. Worked like a charm.

I learned and relearned my lesson way back, when the q-tip scratched the ear canal and came back red, and it took a while to clot....

It was a great laxative.....

I DIDN'T get the eardrum....

I've been having the "full" ear feeling for a couple of months now. Like my ears just need to pop or empty out. I went to the doctor, he looked inside, then gave me flo-nase. Then I got sicker than a dog, which I guess is one of the side-effects. :wtf: I think I will try the hydrogen peroxide/warm water solution next.
