Eico ST-40, Redo/Modo

I also rebuilt a ST40 about a year ago and switched to Russky 6P3SE or 6l6wxt and gave the amp to my son. I dunno what changes i did as i might have not documented the rebuild like i usually do. Anywho, my son really likes the amp and even with the larger Russian tubes the cage still fits without interference. It drives a pair vintage B&W 301???, the ones that have a pair of L shaped iron legs, without any problem.
 
Please tell us all more Dandy, or at least me, lol. The loudness mod was done. It sounds great and very detailed now with no hum, all the capacitors were replaced except the disks. I have not tried the phono, AM/AM/FM or tape stages yet, just the AUX/MPX.
I have another in the heap that needs a few knobs and other than that, it is complete.
I rebuilt the circuits contained in the tone stage PECs with discrete components mounted on perf board. They are demarcated by dotted lines on the schematic. The replacements are not much bigger than the originals, as you can see from the attached pics.

But, the ST40 schematic does not give the component values. I read somewhere that they are the same parts used in the HF81 (part #29751), so I copied the values from there. I recommend that you color code the numbered wires, with the same colors for each PEC.

I can't find the website where I got the HF81 values from, but I copied them down onto the attached schematic and worked from it. Sorry the pic is quite small. At the top, the values are 100k, 4700pF, 4700pF and 100kThe value of that resistor in the middle is 120k. And the cap below it is: 330pF.

Listening to the ST40 afresh, I would describe the modded sound with a CDP input as very smooth.

p.s. Looking at a hand-drawn schematic that I copied separately, I see an additional 1k connecting the junction of the 120k resistor and the 330pF to wire 5. I can't honestly say if I included that as the Eico schematic doesn't show it. Sorry, I should have kept a clearer record of my work, so don't do this mod till I or someone else can clarify that point...

I have found the thread where these PECs are discussed. The same discrepancy (is there a 1k resistor or not) is found there. Compare the values in post #9 with those in post #15.

Great seeing this thread resurface, especially as I have one of Kegger's ST-40s full of Chinese 6L6GCs that I need to vet.

Thanks for the info Dandy, I am loving this amp as I set it up and try it out. Even set flat it souds great. I did use the 56K resistors on the splitter. I want to do this other amp I have, It needs knobs so maybe I can change the tone pots out for single shaft.

Hey Andyman, did Kegger have any other info in his computer about this amp? Please post your vetting info if you do it. Last night I realized something is wired backwards, I thought it was me hooking the left speaker to the right side and so on. Nope, not the case. Might have always been this way.
 
I have his desktop and over 2100 images in Spice about his schematics, so I will look for something on these builds. Unfortunately, some of the schematics don't jibe with what is sitting in front of me. I can also roll the one I have here for some pics, but I'm not sure it's the same build/desugn.

Unfortunately, I know what that's like- to build something, do an upgrade/mod on it- and just flat out forget to update the schematic you were working on, to the final version.

I have, a few times, tried to build a second example of something I built before- and realized that I now have to remember, and or re-engineer, the last few changes I made to the first one.

This is why I now take LOTS of pictures of the underside of any amp I build or mod now... so, even if I do forget to update a schematic at the time, I can go through the pictures, and update it later...

I think it’s a personality thing. Some of us just want to do the work and not record each step along the way — and the final result. But we should, as it’s the only way we can talk accurately about it later.
 
Well Keg was pretty much "Born to Solder" and was always working on something; sometimes several somethings as he would see or read something and become consumed by it, to the detriment of whatever project he was working on beforehand. That being said, his organizational talents weren't quiet on the same plane as his vision and design ones.. :D

I still have a few builds of his I have no clue what his goal was, and haven't had much luck with his local and online buddies. But every now and then something like this pops up helps to clear something up.
 
I recently downloaded a copy of the Eico ST40 construction manual wiring,construction, complete start to finish to complete the amplifier. My question is I have tons of parts, tubes, iron, and wire should I challenge myself and build this or pursue other amp projects? I have built kits before just never built from scratch.

It depends on your skill level and more importantly your ability to troubleshoot. Learning to troubleshoot is something i acquired over the years as my knowledge of what caused the issue/s can lead to a quick solution. Building is the easy part and hopefully you won't make any mistakes. But without a mentor to give you advice and notice the small things which can cause hum issues and other problems your success will be a factor of the complexity of the project. Because of that i suggest you start your first scratch build with a single ended amp like a Magnavox console which has maybe only 10 to 20% of the parts of an eico st40. But as i said, it depends on your skill level.
 
Skill level is very good I’ve worked on Electronics for over 38 years now. I also built TVs, test gear, a Dynaco ST 70. My question was this is completely scratch built and I enjoy building that’s why I chose the ST40. I know I could easily build a SE amp just want something better.
 
There are some builds around here based on ST40 iron. Check them out. If possible utilities want to avoid some of the extraneous circuitry and the 12DW7 tubes.

Could you tell us what your iron is? Is it from an ST40, Eico ST70, or...?
 
These are 8k transformers in the ST-40 and 6.6k-6.8k for the ST-70. You can run 6l6 tubes on 6.6k transformers with a fixed bias design for around 26 watts. This ST-40 I have sounds great with this mod and it is easy to do. Iron would make a great little power amp if just the transformers where available. Then you could build a little preamp to go along with it in the formats you listen to. That preamp could be moved to other power amps in the future.

Well, I finally got around to this amp and it took a bit of digging. Apparently this is a second build as it features orange drops as caps. I couldn't find it until I found an "Orange Drop Amp" folder in his ST-40 file.
At any rate, it's ups and running now and sounds really quite nice. Keg rewired the speakers for "normal" use and not the Center channel tomfoolery Eico built it with, so that made life interesting. Eico also has the same nonsense with inputs, but once I landed on MX1 and MX2 all is good.
Right now it's playing Gerry Mulligan "Dragonfly" on Telarc via some Minimus 77s I just refoamed as bench test speakers and it's sounds stunning. I'll bring it out to the main rig and let it work on the A7s and 10Pis later.

no pec's on that amp... :) I seem to remember a discussion wid Keg about doing exactly what he did to it. The 7199 PEC can basically be copied off any other 7199 circuit, and .22 uF coupling caps will do jus' fine. IMO, bumping the split load a wee bit, say use 39 kOhm resistors instead of 47k is a fine thing to do.

On mine, one of the pecs went bad while I was watching and one of the 7591's got hot...so off I went. Mind the grid circuit resistance for the 7591 as IIRC that is rolled into the PEC.

I just moved it over to the AR 10 Pi and it still sounds good on the aux input, but the Phono stage is all garbled and loud. I don't think Keg messed with it, but will dig into that later. The amp really has some impressive solid bass in here, but I also find I have to dial it up quiet a bit more than his other amps I've had here, all which are 6L6 variant driven. I'll try and dig up some schematics for screenshots and post them later. Meanwhile here's a couple pics of the topside...
