Electro-Voice Sentry 500's - refoam complete

While looking for new garage speakers, I found and bought six of these Electro-Voice Sentry 500's.
They were cheap because all woofers were in need of repair, 4 were just refoams, the last 2 having badly torn cones. Covers were all missing except one.
I guess these are true studio monitors, and stock only to down to 40hz or so, and use "4th order Butterworth" tuning, whatever that is. There is a step down kit, which I think then gets the speaker to 28hz?

There's a couple of threads here about this speaker but no detailed pics, so I thought I'd post a few for future searchers.

The woofers are really well made, quite heavy with significant cooling.
I haven't done anything else to the speakers other than new foam and gaskets.

The Crossovers, and there is a plug on the backside of speaker split the crossover for bi-amping.

I thought about trying to glue this tear in the cone...but, nah. The woofers are common enough that there are recone kits at about $65-$70 per kit. Whew, I'm not sure I'll be doing that.
Maybe I'll pull the tweeters\crossovers and sell, then trash the cabinets.

Thanks, I'm now thinking I need a bigger garage, LOL. Or smaller speakers, these can really fill up the space.

Seems like I'm getting a bit improved lower response by plugging one of the two ports. In my garage, the speakers are kinda boomy and I think the plugs are helping with that. I don't really know what's happening by plugging the ports, just messing around.

I am not convinced the re-cone kits listed for this woofer are correct.
These all came to me with rounded foam surrounds and woofers at 5.6 ohms DC resistance.
The replacements are accordion surrounds and say 8 ohm.
I'd post links here, but kinda forbidden...

I'm trying to talk myself into repairing the last pair of these, but I am waffling.

Well, I didn't do the repair on the damaged woofers.
I just want these for garage speakers, so I'm not too picky and picked up a pair of Dayton 12" woofers.
Didn't turn out "great", I can tell it doesn't sound "as good". Maybe it's not bad, but I should have repaired the OEM's.
I'll probably just live with it this way.

Not a problem - I'm glad that I didn't get the wrong recone kit

I have a pair of s500. I also restored and refoamed woofers. It's hard to find the original foam, but I have an address in Germany (http://alturl.com/vked5). Best result, like new. The alternate replacement woofer is not a shadow of the original.
I also painted the speakers with success, $ 8 black vinyl paint per kilo, using a roller. I mounted a standard connector for the stand and side handles, due to the weight and size. I am extremely pleased now. They are like new.

I agree that replacements don't cut the mustard compared to the originals.
I did install replacements and for my garage use, they are adequate - but damn, I'll have to think hard about a complete rebuild on the originals.

Mine are like new, incomparable to the most modern anemic and narrow-bodied. Of course I also have a pair of Sentry100 and a pair of S80 stage system for TV.

I just ran in to a pair of 500. I’ve recapped them, new surrounds. I’ve done the tuning equivalent to the step down kit using my WiiM Ultra. It’s one of the finest speakers I own.
