Anyone familiar with the floor standing (30" H ... 17" W ... 17" D) Electro-Voice Stereon 850?

An EV catalog (#159) describes it as follows ...

A 3-Way speaker system designed specifically to complement the Patrician 800 or Georgian 400, providing an economical and space saving method of expansion to stereo. Utilizes the midbass, treble, and very-high-frequency components of the Patrician 800 (SP12D, T250 with 8HD and T350) with crossover and level controls. Response 100 to 23,000 cps> Shipping weight 101 lbs. Net Each ... $375

Sounds like a good speaker. If the price is right you can;t go wrong as the drivers are worth good money by themselfs.

EDIT: Come to think of it, why would anyone with a Patrician be concerned about an ECONOMICAL upgrade to stereo (or compact, for that matter)?

I agree. Patricians are incredible. It will need a woofer or subwoofer, but the drivers are all very nice.

The speaker belongs to a lady friend ... I am trying to figure out a fair price ... she might want to CL it ... not sure I want to fool with pulling the drivers ...

Hi, I happen to have a pair of E-V Georgian 400s, and just TODAY I was looking at the crossover connection info on the speaker. It shows how to hook it up when using a pair of Georgian 400s!

Paragould... Fairly close to where I'm originally from which is Searcy. I travel up close to you on occasion to Jonesboro. Actually, I travel all over AR and OK.

From a Georgian 400 hookup panel:

Look at the lower left one, to use with 2 Georgian 400s. With the right transformer, it works like a center channel for your 400s! I love it!

There is no sign of any other EV speakers ... from what I have gathered the Stereon 850 dates from the early '60s, so there is no telling how it was used ... but I would be surprised if it wasn't used with some other EV speakers.

I didn't see an XT1 transformer ... but I wasn't looking for one ... is it bigger than a "bread box"? ... maybe you (or a fellow AK'er) can provide a pic of an XT1 transformer.

I've never seen so much as a picture, and I think I typed XT1 (number one after XT) when I probably should have typed XTI (letter I). Hard to tell from the crossover diagram...

I think this is the sort of thing that has to be found in an old catalog -- and I don't have much in old EV stuff. Maybe we could ask Grumpy to take a look through his stuff?

My guess is that the XTI is much smaller than a breadbox, and probably closer to the size of your fist, or at most it might be in a can the size of a large-ish EV crossover.

Duh! ... I am sitting here looking at one in EV catalog 159 which was with the Stereon 850 ... it appears to be silver and measures 4 7/16" x 3 11/16" x 4 11/16" tall and weighs 4 3/4 lbs ... that's the good news.

The bad news is that I don't recall seeing anything like the picture lying around ... but I will take a good hard look for it Wed. ...

It may have left the premises with whatever big EVs that the Stereon 850 was used with.

Maybe... but in any case it could be a LONG HUNT to find one of those. Any description of the function, even from the catalog, would be helpful. It might have a high-pass filter, but it definitely seems to sum L+R, which would be pretty cool.

From the diagram on the 400, the Stereon has terminals marked G, P, and C. C seems to be Common, P is never used, but G? Must stand for "Good". :yes:

From the NO. 159 catalog ...

... The XT1 may also be used to play a remote monaural speaker system from a stereo source without sacrificing sound content of either channel. Still another use is that of providing an authentic third (center) channel source. The XT1 passes sum tones of right and left channels to the center speaker system which regroups them as a new set of sounds identical to those “heard” by the central microphone in a typical three-point pickup arrangement. Complete instructions for all three uses are packed with unit.

BTW the XT1 cost $13.50 when this catalog was current ...

That's a good-sized unit for a transformer, and making a center channel that only does 100hz and up, but WELL, is darn cool. Last night I was scheming about using a basement room to set up the Georgian 400s in the corners of the long wall, and room dimensions are such that you can't sit very far away... a center channel would be just the ticket. I'm not worried about the bass with corner-loaded horns. Yeah, a Stereon 850, that's what I need...

Finish looks pretty similar to my 400s, might be a match. Cabinet style is slightly different. In that second picture it looks like it has a port at the bottom???

That's an aftermarket shelf added by the previous owner so that he could add casters ... it can be removed ... didn't cause any noticable damage to the bottom of the cabinet ... I'll post a pic of the bottom.
