I am considering upping my amplifier game. I currently use Definitive Technology D11 bookshelf speakers run with a Rotel A12 integrated amplifier. I am looking at replacing the Rotel with an ELECTROCOMPANIENT ECI 6D integrated amplifier. Just curious if anyone has any thoughts about this pairing. Would it be a good match? Would the amp be too much for the speakers?
I would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks.

I can't really help, but I'll offer a caveat: EC doesn't (or rather, didn't use to) produce service manuals, and they don't appear to have a distributor in the US - so if anything goes wrong with your amp you are looking at shipping it back to Norway for repair.

As for your question "Would the amp be too much for the speakers?" - received wisdom around here is that no amp is too much for any speakers - but a heavy hand on the volume control may well be.
 
I did look on their website. Electrocompaniet has no distributor or anyone who sells their products in the US. If you need service you are SOL because you would need to ship it back to Norway. That better be one inexpensive amp you are looking at.
 
Wow, a brand I haven't even thought of in many a year, and would have assumed were no longer in business... did they fade and arise again like Lazarus, or have they been around the whole time?
 
The EC amps are described as warm and "tubelike"...that, along w their beauty has me interested.

I don't recommend buying one. No USA official importer, therefore no service agent. And they do not have service manuals available for anyone outside of Electrocompaniet. Get something you can get service information on, can get repaired, can get spare parts for.

Did you bother asking if they were an official authorized dealer?? The ad states that they have to order from Norway. That means no one in the US to fix it if it breaks down.
 
When I ordered, the site gave me the option of a two year warranty or a three year warranty. This is posted on their site:

Well, the original went bust in 2004 and Per Abrahamsen moved on and started his own brand Abrahamsen. Someone bought the remains of Electrocompaniet and continued doing business and this past summer they went bust for the second time. Once again someone bought the remains/invested and continued on.
 
I contacted Electrocompaniet, and they confirmed that Sound Approach IS an authorized dealer and that the warranty would be honored. However, the point of having to ship to Norway to get it fixed, should something go wrong, is not lost of me. I've asked Sound Approach to clarify how that would work...if not for the obvious. I live about 45 minutes from Sound Approach, so if they have someone on site that could work on the amp using EC parts, I think that would be a reasonable solution. Waiting to hear back. I would not normally worry so much ahead of time and plan for if it goes wrong, however, the cost of this item obviously warrants that level of scrutiny.

The other issue is, of course, my original question... with an obvious HUGE difference in price, the D11's being $1,000 vs. the cost of the EC, an upgrade is probably warranted in the speaker dept. I really love the sound of the D11's though and want to give them a shot. Does anyone see an issue with running the D11's w the ECI 6D spec-wise? Also, does anyone have any experience w McIntosh XR50's?

I've heard the XR50's at my local shop. They are seriously good. The XR50's have a well balanced top end, and the bass impact and extension will make you think you're listening to a floorstander. By far the best dynamics I've ever heard from a small speaker. If I was in the market for a top flight stand-mounted speaker, these would be on the short list without a doubt.

Is that a recent change? I know HiFi Sound in Minneapolis sold their stuff within the last five years.

I just looked at their list of distributors by country. The US wasn’t listed. I imagine anyone who is selling Electrocompaniet has their own warranty package that you would need to pay extra for.
 
Interesting, The Sound Environment here in Omaha NE sells ELECTROCOMPANIENT so it would lead me to believe that they are an authorized dealer as well.

Not sure if they are able to do repairs or if they have to be shipped out however.
 
I spoke w Dale at Sound Approach he stated that they are an authorized dealer for Electrocompaniet. I also spoke w Electrocompaniet and they confirmed it. Further, Dale said, there are several Authorized Service facilities in the US. They have been established for decades. There will be no issue handling service, if I need it in the future. He said they also have a service shop there ( at Sound Approach), and are an Authorized McIntosh Lab service facility. I am excited about my new amp and not worried about service or warranty coverage. It's funny, because I have really only been an aspiring audiophile for about 10+ years or so...odd that I picked such an obscure brand. However, if you knew me...you would not be that surprised! ;-)

Your words confirm what the reviews have said about them. They are only 81db efficient, but I think 125 watts should handle that.

I think at this point, I am going to give my Def Tech D11's a go w the Electrocompaniet ECI-6D. They are wonderfully detailed speakers w a terrific soundstage even w my 60 watt Rotel. I imagine the 125 watts will open them up even more. They are rated to go up to 200 watts, so they can take it. I also expect the bass performance will both increase and improve. The recent update has the new amp arriving to me next Tuesday.
