Electrovoice TW-35 + CR-35

audiozaz

rtfm!? - tl;dr
Hi,

I picked up some awfully built and implemented DIY speakers at a rummage sale, mostly based on a tweeter level control on the back of them labeled ''Wolverine''

While I was a bit bummed not to find a nice LS8 fullrange, I did get a pair of TW-35 Wolverine horn tweeters and CR-35 crossovers.

Here is the woofer/mid, a fullrange RSC TwinTone 8'' driver:

TW-35 + CR-35 crossovers:

Inside the CR-35:

TW-35 being tested on top of my Karlsonettes, using the 3rd order 3khz network normally used on my Transylvania Tubes:

I also resurected a few months old thread about the specifics of CR-35, gladly so, as the OP seems to still have interest in this:

The TW-35 sounds a bit spitty as is on top of my K12, but to be fair it's not attenuated whatsoever.

When testing the CR-35 crossover, I could hear them squeal at the frequency I fed them... :scratch2:

"a bit spitty".
I didn't realize that you were a diplomat in your day job.

;-)

To call the T-35 family a bit spitty is akin to referring to Chuck Norris as "possibly a wee bit intimidating".

LMAO :)

Any way to politely implement these into a listenable system? They at least do not seem too awful to my ears. I only heard them briefly with the CR-35 3.5kHz 1st order crossover; they at least seem to do better with my 3rd order @3kHz.

They still bring decent money, though. Best suggestion: sell them and buy something friendlier with the proceeds.

I really like my TW-35's in my custom EV's cabinets...

It's hard to compare to other horns as they're the only ones I own though.

BTW, I'm the mentioned OP in the another thread for those interested.

Audiodaz, I've bought FR RSC 8'' too from the Auction site a few months ago. Unfortunately, one of them was buzzing like crazy and when trying to repair it, I manage to destroy it completely. I just have a good sounding orphan right now...

Try first order at 10 kHz with a good capacitor and an L-pad.
They're also, unfortunately, not too extended.

I will say that the EV Wolverine LT-12 (basically an LS-12 twincone plus a TW-35) is remarkably pleasant sounding in its stock configuration (as is the EV Esquire, which uses a T-35B as its tweeter).

That's a bit encouraging at least. :)

I'll play 'round with them some more and form a better opinion. Just happy to find something EV for once.

High-passed around 20kHz with a single 1µF cap, the TW-35 do an OK job on top of my small Karlson K5 with Pionner A11, which itself lacks sparkle. Sensitivity matches allright enough with no L-pad. It's likely ~15dB down around 5kHz, with the sensitivity rise above this compensating a bit for the lack of extension above 10kHz. Maybe the fact that the little K5 is problematic itself allows the TW-35 to somewhat "shine"? :scratch2: :D

You know... at my house... there's a pair of Fostex T90As sittin' atop my Duplex cabinets... hint-hint...

;-)

I tamed the TW-35 *spitting* by REBUILDING the CR-35 crossovers.

The values are as follows. *note* This is a 6dB crossover.

The crossover frequency is at 3500Hz.

Tweeter capacitor used is a Dayton 6.8 MFD @250V Polypropyline @1% tolerance

Kept the .322mH choke.

Kept the 100 ohm POT and cleaned it with De-Oxit red.

NICE!!

I've got a pair of Wolverine 3-way speakers that I completely overhauled. Have info galore.

LS-12 woofers
MR-10 mid-range horns
TW-35 Tweeter horns

CR-10 (rebuilt) mid-range crossover (1khz)
CR-35 (rebuilt) High range crossover for tweeter (3.5Khz)

Great sound.... Had the *spitting* problem from the tweeters. Fixed them.

Thanks for the values. I keep them as references as one of my speakers outputs less highs than the other one (time to rebuild).

However, I'll probably buy new chokes and L-Pads (x-overs firmly sealed and probably filled with tar).

I have these speakers with exactly yours drives . I am trying to rebuild x over for these . Can you help me to pick size of capacitors and name brand ? Mine is unmarked caps when I opened them up, so no idea what size I should replace. What cap for CR-10 and CR-35?Please help ! Thanks

Some people love the EVt35 type tweeters and some hate them. I happen to love them, as did Paul W Klipsh !!! Hearing is very subjective !!!!!!!!!!!! JOHN
